Most of the time you can't make an assessment after playing an FCS school, because plain simply you just can't really take much away from a game like that....

With that said, I think the fact that we played an FCS school and Taylor Martinez had the ball in his hands 90% of the time raises some red flags..............actually, that's putting it lightly. I think it hoists a huge ass bright red flag onto every flag pole in Nebraska, and it doesn't have a big white 'N' on it either. I mean, I can only assume that we will need Taylor to carry the ball even more against better teams, no? Because that seems to be what we want to showcase on offense.....

So let's think logically here, because I'm not sure if Bo is thinking logically..............Taylor is not a big guy, and neither is Brion Carnes...................those are really our only 2 options for running this style of offense. What in the hell are we going to do when Taylor gets broken into pieces? I'm not gonna lie, Tennessee Chatanooga is no slouch when it comes to making some hits.........they laid the wood to Taylor several times yesterday.........and here we are heading into the most physical conference in the country, and all I see is an offense that seems to be based around Taylor Martinez running the football.

I know, it's just the first game and it's against a cupcake........I get that. But that's actually my point, I guess.................we couldn't really effectively move the sticks through the air against much lower competition...........which tells me if we can't do that against East Cupcake State, then we are going to struggle to do that against anyone in the Big 10............and Taylor is indeed going to just be running the entire time.

:L

I don't know................it just doesn't look like a solid thing to me. I know Taylor took off running a lot on his own, but let's not shit ourselves...........Bo and Beck aren't discouraging him from doing that, or otherwise he wouldn't be doing that so much. As selfish as some people like to think Taylor is, you watch the sidelines..........nobody is telling him not to run. It seems to almost be a thing where everyone is on the same page, and everyone understands that we just want to get him in open space as much as possible.

Our secondary is going to get beat some this year, but overall I like our defense...........and the special teams unit is just fantastic. Good kickoff and punt coverage, great punting by Maher, great kicking by Maher........very encouraging in that department.......kicking can win ball games.

That is all for now.

Bitch Bitch Bitch

I didn't hear any excuses going into or coming out of the locker room. Things were addressed accurately by Bo and Beck. IMO

I really am not bitching at all.........if you could hear my tone of voice it would be more clear.

I am seriously concerned about this. There is no way in hell Taylor can stay healthy running the ball into heavy traffic with no lead blockers all season.

JJM is right. I thought this offense was gonna be more geared toward getting the ball in MULTIPLE playmakers hands. Take away that nice option pitch to burkhead, and there was not one solid option play that didn't involve taylor just keeping and taking off.

tito can't pass...there is your problem there. defenses can still have 8 or 9 in the box.

I don't know if I would put this on Martinez. I think he distributed the ball better this year than last year but with that said I agree he is keeping it too much but is that because he automatically tucks and runs or is it because our line sucks so bad he doesn't have time to go through his progression before the pressure is on and he scrambles.

One thing I did notice is that I don't think he is going to be the great quarterback Bo has propped him up to be this year. He may have a break out season but I don't see it. He is fast but only if he gets out in the open. He can't or doesn't make the cut and jukes to get in the open often enough to really make a difference. Perhaps with some better blocks or better cohesion on the offense but I really don't think he can cut.

I do know our line sucks again and that brings my expectations for this season way down.

They say a teams greatest advancement is from week 1 to week 2 though so let's see what they can improve this week. Fresno State will be no gimme.

It was a truly a 'work in progress game' on the way to the identity. TO's playbook has officially been dusted off as . People think Osborne's playbook was simple 'student body left/right' stuff but there's more to it. His playbook was described in the 90's as being as thick as a Phoenix AZ phonebook and less than half of it was even being run back then.
The execution of option football requires timing. The ultimate goal is to go North/South but they've got to learn to go East/West first. O-lineman need to stunt, they've got to know their pulling assignments. Skill players need to be where they're supposed to be. Running backs and blocking rcvrs. They executed some of those option plays well yesterday for big gainers, others were executed poorly as a group as one could expect from running a new offense. That's what the film room is for.

Back in the 90's TO started requesting the team leave for their bowl games two weeks earlier than they had been to maintain focus and timing. It paid off in big ways. Keep in mind those teams were twenty years deep in system experience across the board .

In review Martinez will see he needs hold the ball a bit longer before he pitches. He needs to get the defender to commit to him. He needs to fake a pitch once in a while to keep the defender honest. He'll get more comfortable in his roll. I think his hesitancy and decision making will come along as the overall execution improves.

In Beck's interview he said he was doing the same thing over and over because he's determined to see them get it right. That says it all.

It reminded me of a Solich run 'TO offense' with a Bo Pelini defense.

All I can say is stay positive and embrace the identity as it develops.

Since when has Nebraska had a pure passer? Vince Ferragamo?

I'm not asking for a pure passer....I'm asking for a quarterback that can throw up near the numbers.

And I'm asking for WR's who can catch the fucking ball.

He completed 11 of 22 and seemed to distribute it evenly across the field. Yeah he had some bad passes but there were some that should f been caught that weren't.

I think for our system he will be fine. Our problem is the line not the quarterback.

Do you want that offense back, or the one where NU sacrificed pure passing ability for option football?

Steve Taylor, Tommie Frazier, Scott Frost, Eric Crouch. etc etc

I will add it hurts to watch him throw. He is one ugly passer.

I guess that makes sense............but I still find it a little odd that we let an FCS team kick the shit out of our QB just so he could get the plays right. It's one thing to take sacks, but it's another thing to get hit by 3 guys while running full speed in the open field.........and to have it happen 20 times in one game.

Bottom line, there HAS to be some concern due to the fact that we have literally no depth at the QB position.

If Taylor goes down, the entire season rests in the hands of a Freshman.......and if he goes down.......:popeye:

My expectations will be humbled until deapth can be developed across the board into the system. I've no problem w/ a 10 win season including a potential CCG and bowl.
