In as much as I appreciate many here who write that both Chester and Polumbus stink, what does it say that this team can find no one to beat them out and worse, about our prospects for the upcoming season? I'm currently rethinking my earlier prediction for the season.

Benefit of the doubt, I'll wait until the end of the pre-season then start another poll relating to predictions for the season. It should be interesting to make the comparison from the earlier poll(s).

From what I've read, Morgan is no where close to being ready. He needs a couple years of seasoning. Long, however, is much further along. He has the physical skills today, he just needs to learn the offense and the assignments better. This is why I say he may be playing before season's end.

Licht we are probably stuck with until next year at the earliest. I don't see anyone on the roster beating him out this season.

I understand 3rd round picks shouldn't jump in right away but there competition is avg at best that is why I thought they would give the starters a go in training camp. If Long and Moses can't be mentioned as starters next year then something is wrong. I say this b/c of the competition on the current roster. We have the weakest interior line in the division and for the past 5 years. You would think this problem would have been solved by now. If Levno doesn't step up we are in serious trouble this year. I wonder how Gabe Jackson is making out. Anyone know?

The kind of talent you are talking about on the line that comes in and starts early is rarely found in the third or later rounds. You want guys who take the jobs of Chester and Polumbus from the moment they walk into the door?? Those guys are usually found in the 1st and 2nd round. Now as we have not spent a 1st or 2nd rounder on the line in that same five year span, what do you expect?? Maybe next year we will finally start to address the line with the kind of talent you would be accepting of. But apparently we had more pressing needs for those picks.

Valid points. Also remember that we haven't had many of those higher picks that last few years while we had a bunch of holes to fill.

look , i am not going to gripe about 2 3rd round guys who arent ready to start year one . its foolish to "expect" that year one .

polumbus is avg and chester perhaps below avg but that doesnt mean a rookie will waltz right in and take a job from them

as for predictions i see 6 to 7 wins at this point .

we havent been tested very well yet this preseason so i will take the play with a grain however that can change as well

i am happy with where we are at for now

2nd to 4th round guards and tackles have started in the NFL. Its not uncommon. My point is that there is a greater chance for a olineman drafte to start on the our line b/c the talent level is just average except for Trent. I mentioned Gabe Jackson b/c he was the best guard in the SEC last year. Why couldn't he beat out Chester? Its very possible. Yes, I think Long over Jackson was a major blunder. I hope im wrong. There is not even a camp buzz for Long.

Yes, 2nd to 4th round guards have started in the NFL, but it is very uncommon for them to start as rookies. We get your point. The rookies are going against inferior talent. But this is inferior talent that knows the offense and knows how to play in the NFL. I think you underestimate those points.

eh, the lions started two rookie o linemen last year, warford and waddle. they had one of the best lines in the league. ur right though, its uncommon
i value the coaches and the scheme more than the individual players which is how an effective o line is ran. we have trent williams, one of the best in the league. the lions have five guys that average fans dont know. but one oline sucks and the other is good.

All the more reason to not expect dramatic improvements at this time & to probably play it safe by sticking with experienced players for a bit longer. You mention coaches & schemes - both of those are brand new. Combine that with rookie players & why in the world would you expect it to work from day 1?

Just read that country. I though Moses and Long did pretty well last game. They are both young but I think there is hope for both. Glad to see they are going to play Moses at RT the last two games.

i think both are progressing nicely and hopefully those 2 kids can learn something vs some 1st team raven defenders :suds:

so far they both appear to be good picks

It appears that Gruden is much more amenable to putting rookies in the fire to see what they can do. One of the knocks on Shanahan was that some guys never seemed to get a chance. He hated playing rookies. I think this is a perfect time to throw these guys out there with the first team. Sometimes you find the gamers this way. Its also invaluable experience.
