2 years ago we had a killer D and a conservative offense.
I see our defense getting weaker but our offense getting stronger.

Seems like the model to build a Superbowl NFL franchise is you have your franchise QB, an explosive offense, and then a defense that is not great but good enough to win the games for you. That's the blueprint of the Pats, Packers, Saints, Colts. Same with the Ravens. They used to have a really good D that has gotten worse and worse, and they have been relying more and more on their offense especially the big plays.

Is that the way we are headed? Goldson is walking, Justin is hurt and old, Soap is old and might walk. Our LBs are good but other than that we have a lot of holes on D developping.

But now we have Kaep on offense and he's proven he can come back and hang in there and score with anyone.

I think we'll see an infusion of youth to the defense this year through the draft, which should pay off in the future. So we're going to do a mini re-build of the defense to keep us at the same level, instead of loading up the offense this year. In the first three rounds, we could potentially see in no particular order a DE, CB, S, NG, and even a pass rushing specialist.

On offense we might see a WR drafted early if he's BPA, we might see a TE (it would have to be clearly BPA), or we might see a C. But I think they'll probably take a stab at C in the mid-rounds. Other than that, what would we really draft on offense? I don't see a QB, RB, T, G taken in the first three rounds unless it was extraordinary value. I would like Lattimore but not sure we'd pull the trigger until after the 3rd given the severe injury risk which is a lot more than what Gore was looking at when he came out.

For WR we'll likely add a mid-tier FA WR to replace Manningham who could be the 2nd. Jenkins could come out of nowhere next year too. So if we don't grab a WR in the first two picks, we could easily wait until the 4th to add one.

For all these reasons, I'd almost be surprised if we do add more than one offensive player in the first three rounds despite all the picks.

The common thing in pretty much all SB winners is they have a franchise QB. Usually the D will be good at D or give up yards but get TO's. And I don't think our D is in that bad a shape. 2 of the best LB, 1 of the best young pass rushers. Secondary and DL need work but they have to ammo to get some good talent there. I am more concerned about Fangio. His defenses usually get worse the longer he stays.

That is not a blueprint for winning Championships, that is a blueprint for getting to the playoffs and then eventually losing unless the NFL goes out of its way to put one of those teams over the top for a win.

Every Super Bowl that the 49ers have won, they have had an excellent defense. The biggest reason they lost this recent Super Bowl was because the defense and specifically Culliver and Whitner shit the bed in coverage.

I've love to have the defense we had 2 years ago in the playoffs (the one that played against Saints and Giants), but it's definitely getting worse since then not better.

We could infuse it with talent with a good draft that is deep at DL and safety.
But unless that happens and we hit a homerun and guys can start right away, seems like our team is headed in this direction of having a dynamic QB, but defense is good but not great. Aldon couldn't do jack without Justin next to him, and our secondary sucked in the playoffs, maybe the only good piece of the secondary in the playoffs was Tarell Borwn the rest of it stunk.

Aldon couldn't do jack because he was also injured. He was on the injury report for the playoffs and end of the season for his shoulder.

i'm closer to this view.

while i get the gist of the orginal post, don't feel it'll go that far from defense, to offense. if you have a "franchise" QB and a decent O-line, then your offense has a decent chance to win it all.

we do have a good defense but they went South in the play-offs, one of those things. even then they did well enough to almost win the SB. all things equal, prefer this draft class strengthen D, even if it ends up two linemen in a row.

given a choice, i'd shore up the rush before coverage.

Your defense needs to be at least playing good at the time to win the SB.

You look at the high powered offensive teams that won like the Colts, Saints, and Green Bay and all their defenses were playing really well at the time they won. And when those defenses came back down to earth they haven't really made much noise since.

agree.

defenses tend to rise in the play-offs, relative to their regular season standing. but not all defenses peak during play-off time, and is why it is better to start with a good defense.

with the cap in place, a good defense means less offense, but still think that is closer to a SB winner. this as opposed to an explosive offense, but poor defense. an explosive offense works better in the regular season, than play-offs.
