The starters would be fine for the next the game if they played a quarter or two of the San Fran game in terms of rust.

Banking on the possibility of a tie happening between the Vikings and Lions objectively makes far less sense from a stastical standpoint than worrying about injuries to starters happening in a game beforehand that would be meaningless in any event other than a tied final between the Vikings and Lions. I already laid out how incredibly unlikely a tie is with current OT rules that have been in place in recent years.

Lions fans would suddenly have a very different take on this even if they beat San Fran and Goff went down with a knee injury in the 3rd or 4th quarter of that game.
The premise I kept reading was the game didn’t matter at all. No one is saying a tie is likely. Just that it’s possible. So the premise is clearly wrong

Yes we’ve been over that. Should the Chiefs not rest anyone next week?
It’s not the same scenario. I haven’t read the whole thread but perhaps that’s why? So That’s up to the Chiefs. Their game is meaningless. Some coaches think avoiding injury is most important and some think keeping the train rolling is. They better at least rest their already injured QB

You have no points.

Please explain why you are more worried about the Lions/Vikes game ending in a tie than injuries to Lions players against San Fran when there hasn't been a tied game in the NFL in 2 years now, and only 4 total from 2020 - 2022.

Worrying about injuries in football is a futile endeavor.

Resting players in a meaningless or next to meaningless game is more than just about avoiding injury, just saying.

He's too dense to understand because he is blinded by this being by far the closest the Lions have been to serious playoff success during the Superbowl era.

It’s not going to happen. For good reason.

What could possibly be a reason to rest guys tomorrow other than avoiding injury? Teddy Bridgewater doesn’t need game reps. The defense is already starting mostly scrubs at this point. They have like four actual starters who aren’t out.

I'm not advocating for or against it. Just saying it's an option for the coaches to consider, especially if there are any players not technically injured but are not at 100% and could use the extra time to heal more. But if there is no one to fill in for them, then obviously no.

I’d assume most everyone is not 100% at this point.

Winning the next two weeks would give every man on the roster a much needed week off.

And give time to see guys like David Montgomery and Alex Anzelone hopefully return.

The chance of a tied game is about 1 in 300. I wouldn't risk starters in Week 17 just because of an increase of 0.3% in my chance to achieve a season's goal. I'd rather get everyone healthy for Week 18 when it mattered. I suggested the same thing about the Seahawks in Week 17.

...but i'm not an NFL coach. Those guys are looking at things differently and i'm not going to prejudge their decisions. However, nothing is risk free and we're all masters of hindsight when decisions go horribly wrong.

The Chiefs situation is a bit different. They know they have a meaningless game followed by a bye week. They may get some playing time just to stop the players getting rusty or complacent.

The Lions have had this game circled since the schedule came out. Record wise it may be meaningless, but it's not meaningless

Plus it's Dan Campbell. Mr bite your kneecaps. Mr Grit. If they're keeping score, I don't think it's meaningless to him.

Whether or not they should do it is probably a valid discussion.

Whether or not they will do it is an exercise in futility. Like Bronco said. "No."

Yes, play balls to the wall in case of a tied game.

The most recent tied game occurred in 2022, and there have been 4 total tied games throughout the 2020's thus far. Yeah, let's worry about a tie, that matters way more than risking injuries to the starters in the otherwise meaingless game leading up to it! lmao

Yea, i agree with you and msgkings on this one, banking on a tie is ridiculous.

If detroit wasn't already banged up id say go for it, but Dan Campbell and all that so we know they ain't resting
