that went well

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the MLBPA is expected to reject the proposal MLB extended at their meeting last Friday.

MLB proposed a 154-game schedule, with Maury Brown of Forbes reporting that the pay is prorated for that amount of games; with spring training starting on March 22nd and the regular season on April 28. It would include an expanded postseason field of 14 teams (down from 16 in 2020) and the universal designated hitter. The MLBPA's decision to reject the proposal isn't a surprise, as they've never been keen on expanded playoffs in exchange for the universal DH, believing the former is much more beneficial to MLB than the latter is to the players. Nightengale hears that the proposal also gives commissioner Rob Manfred expanded authority to suspend the season, something the union also surely isn't crazy about. The MLBPA is expected to formally inform MLB of its decision on Monday, per Nightengale. It's not clear whether they will submit a counterproposal at that time.

We don't know what the roster size will be this season.

exactly. expanded playoffs makes the regular season basically a preseason. just be a few gms over 500 and you are likely in. then you get an 96 win team playing a 83 win team in a 3 gm series. so stupid

But the owners want that national TV money for expanded playoffs, and they're willing to sacrifice 8 regular season games to do it.

Glad the union told them to stick that shit where the sun don't shine.

Could this be a possible reason why the universal DH was voted against as well?

Owners have little interest in baseball being played with no fans in the stands. I don’t blame them for trying to push it back in hopes they can get some fans back

They can do it, though. We’ve seen fans in stands for 4-5 months. Hell, New York decided it was OK to have fans in the stands as soon as the games got really important(Bills). There is NO reason why they can’t have 25-30% capacity in every stadium with the hopes of expanding that as you get into Summer.

The bigger issue here is that owners are preparing to lock out the players soon, anyway. These 2 groups hate each other. The owners have no interest in seeing much baseball played at all.

I’m sure if they can get fans in the stands, they will want the 162

but something has to give, players want full pay for a full 162 with or without fans, and owners just don’t see any benefit to doing that. And I know these are all filthy rich owners and all that, but they aren’t going to keep taking beatings like they did last season

Agreed. There is no way they want to pay the players for 162 games when there are no fans. But baseball is an outdoor sport(and a Summer sport) and they have no excuse to not have people in the stands. That shouldn’t even be a consideration. I guess it could be an issue here in CA because they fuck everything up, as is, but the rest of the Country should be able to have 10k fans and grow from there

Expanded playoffs. I remember a time when there were 2 divisions in each league...and if you didn't win the division you didn't make the playoffs. In 1993 the Giants went 103-59...2nd best record in the majors, but they finished one game out of first behind the Braves (104-58). So, they DNQ for the playoffs. That's just brutal. That was the season before they went to 3 divisions. Now, before last season, 10 teams qualify. I'm good with that. I wouldn't want to see 14 or 16. That's excessive.

Honestly looking from non covid times I bet the owners wouldn't even agree on this.
Teams like the Yankees/Red Sox who have hope at the playoffs would be fine with the 154 games/extended playoffs.
But a team like the Pirates need that 162 games with the hope they get 5000 fans in mid September to help cover payroll.
NOTE: The bold is sarcasm. Nutting has been robbing the league/Pirates fan's blind for years.

I think there are more blind eye doctors in New York than Covid cases right now, but our leadership are a bunch of idiots too

The higher payroll teams that usually draw 3.5-4 million fans, are at risk of losing even more than teams like the Pirates, limited income to offset the huge payroll expense
