Jeff Bagwell hits 30 hrs once before he's 28 and right about the time Sosa etc start popping so does he. Shocking!

Not saying he didn't use PEDs, but the way his career went doesn't look that abnormal to me. He was already a great hitter before that and it's really not that uncommon for guys to have their best seasons between age 26-32 (and his top 5 seasons all fall in that timeframe). And I don't see how it's that surprising that someone who hit 39 home runs in a shortened 1994 season was able to hit 40+.

Also doesn't hurt that later in his career the Astros went from playing in the pitcher friendly Astrodome to Minute Maid Park, which is a bandbox.

I'll throw in Mike Cameron. 46.7 career WAR. Decent hitter, very good baserunner and very good fielder.

Couple of characters right there. I remember Conlin. He was the guy who didn't vote for Nolan Ryan because of his pedestrian win-loss record.

sounds about right

I’m sure something like this has been done before, but a few guys that come to mind…

Corey Koskie - Concussions derailed his career by his early 30’s, but a steady major league player both with the bat and in the field. Built the foundation for a solid 2000’s decade for the Twins even during a period in the late 90’s when they were bad.
wtf GIF

I might be biased but Kenny Lofton for me. People forget he was a .300 hitter bc he was such a great defensive CF and had an art of stealing bases. Also, .372 lifetime OBP.

He isn't borderline HOF but he is definitely in the Hall of Very good players.

Edgar Martinez was one of the more obvious juicers to me. He suddenly turned into a superhero at age 32. It doesn’t work like that.

I'll agree if you give a nod to Torii Hunter

And since I’m here, I’d like to nominate Andrew McCutchen for the Hall Of Very Good.

Unfortunately yeah. He looked like he had a fair shot 6-7 years ago, but he's had trouble staying on the field. And even when he has, he's been meh.

Another Pirates CF that comes to mind: Andy Van Slyke

Dustin Pedroia. Very good hitter by 2B standards (113 OPS+), great defender. Unfortunately injuries hampered him in his last few seasons and he retired after 2019.

War is a very flawed stat when taken out of context

you tell me

would the Twins rather have had 4 years of Koskie at his peak or Michael Young who for 14 seasons was among the most durable and consistent in the league.

Javier Baez had almost 14 War over 2 years

Do you think Detroit would prefer him over many other options?

You started a good topic and led with some dude who played all of FOUR seasons over 130 games

had we brought him up on page 5 this is a totally different conversation
As a Cubs fan I could have told you Baez would have been bad for the Tigers… Different argument altogether.

It doesn’t matter if it’s on page one or five, the only thing that’s evident is that you’re too pompous and arrogant to admit that Koskie is better that you thought he was.

It’s OK to be wrong. I undervalued Koskie for most of my existence as well…
