I disagree.

The fact that McGwire had almost as many walks as strikeouts says that he is a very patient hitter with as much power as anybody who has ever played. You are basically saying he will put up Adam Dunn numbers, which is foolish.

There are many great 1B bats, but McGwire is among the very best and he costs less than those possibly ranked ahead of him.
Let's dispel some misconceptions....Mac wasn't a patient hitter who drew a ton of walks, he was walked a lot while he was cheating....his on base was a product of TOTAL HORSESHIT. Let's go to the fact...

Mac played 17 years. For a 4 year period during his 30's here are his averages compared to the rest of his career

Mac's 4 year Horseshit period- .290 average, 245 HR(61 per year), 512 walks(128 per year)
His other 13 season totals - .254 average, 338 HR(26 per year), 805 walks(62 per year)

His HR/AB, walks/AB, OB, OBP, are all totally distorted. For the purpose of this mock, his juice years count, but please don't try and make him out to be one of the 5 or 6 best 1st basemen ever...it's a joke

Actually that is incomplete... Problem is that McGwire had 6 of his 16 seasons where he had less than 500 PA...

MLB average for BB% was around 8.8 for when he played... He was above 11% every season he played except for his rookie season... and was over 14% for 13 of his 16 seasons and over 15 for 12 seasons... He was over 20% for 6 seasons

He was a walking machine...

Tis true... In fact I once got to the middle of a tootsie pop in one lick, ate only one Lay's chip without breaking off one piece of that Kit-Kat bar... Ah, the things one does for a Klondike bar...

Just to be clear... If a guy was drafted in 1999 but his first plate appearance was 2001 he is not eligible to play with Wlks band of merry milk monitors...?

@UK Cowboy

I don't know the old time players as well as most of you guys, but I do know stats.

Batting average is the most overrated stat in the game. It is almost meaningless.

Which player is helping his team more:

player A: .250 BA and .400 OBP
Player B: .330 BA and .360 OBP

These are extreme examples, but a power hitter who strikes out a lot walks almost as much is quite valuable. Big Mac may have had 1596 K's, but he also had 1317 walks and 583 HRs in just over 6,000 ABs

I disagree BA is an overrated stat. To answer your question it depends on where in the lineup the player is hitting. If we are talking leadoff then i'd probably rather have player A if we are talking 3rd or 4th place hitter than player B is the better option.

IMO I don't think McGwire is a top 5 1B, not even top 10 honestly. No one is denying he could draw walks and was a great homerun hitter, but that little juicing span makes his numbers very distorted. Unlike a guy like Bonds were he was great before and in a little span he was amazing but not too far off from his regular numbers. I shouldn't even compare the two honestly, but for juicing purposes.

It's not an overrated stat, it's an apples to apples stat. When you pulled up his walk %, you were comparing them to all the other players when he played. When this mock is over, and I don't have to worry about name dropping, we will compare his on juice and off juice numbers to the other 10 starters and see how he stacks up. Remember, that with 11 starters, if you aren't in the top 5 you are middle down. We shall see....

Bonds would have ended up in the class of a Griffey Jr, sadly, that wasn't enough for him. Mac would have ended up... Ryan Howard? I think that is fair...

Idk about that low but he isn't in the top couple tiers of 1st baseman IMO.

I agree with this to a point... I would still say McGwire is one of the best power hitters of all time... even if he is not even close to being one of the best hitters of all time...

Who do you feel more comfortable to hit the HR, Ted Williams or Mark McGwire?? when you need the HR, the ONLY player I would rather have is Bonds...
