Four solid guys and the rest range from mediocre to crap. And yes, I'm looking at YOU, Riot.

Edit: I guess league average wOBA is about .310, so

Panda, Pill, Posey, Melkman = solid
Nate, Kobe, White Horse = above average
Oxy, Baby G = average
ManBur, Chez3, Huffer, Stamos, Riot = woeful

Nate's not such an unattractive sweetener, after all.

Wow. Look at that starting day lineup. That team sure got nowheres. Wait : 2010 !!! (See what I did there?) So how about we stop "the sky is falling" and "we are doomed" talk until July or so, huh? ;)

Who is doing that?

There's a lot of bitching and moaning about the offense and the defense, and quite a few trade "suggestions". I'll wait until late June to decide that a roster mixup is needed. It's the first half of May!

I've been looking over the minor league squads lately, here's what I've noticed:

1. Fresno -- A couple of interesting notes on the starters:Hacker put together three nice starts a couple of weeks ago; Petit seems to be rounding into form as he stretches out; Kown has nice numbers (2.61 ERA, 1.17 WHIP) but only 15 K in 41 IP. Culberson (285/322/496) is doing decently; Kieshnick (321/386/614) is probably the next OF called up; Christian (363/427/570) is not far behind him. Hembree has a 0.77 WHIP in 13 innings (only 10 Ks though)

2. Richmond -- like much of the rest of the minors, young SP are not stretched out yet. Heston has had a nice start (3.42 APQS, 0.84 ERA, 0.87 WHIP) but only 33K in 42 innings. It'll be interesting to see how he fares in Fresno, which I'd expect to see after the ASB. Fitzgerald (2.70 ERA, 1.13 WHIP) seems to be rounding into form as he stretches out. Among the hitters, Mayora (308/360/375) and Cavan (267/351/362) are probably having the best seasons so far, although Mayora has 11 errors. ToJo (254/287/386) is struggling early. Son of Noggin (1.93 ERA 0.70 WHIP, 20 K in 18 IP) is off to a tremendous start.

3. San Jose -- Snodgrass (3.43 APQS, 1.54 ERA, 1.02 WHIP) has been pretty dominant, although only 29K in 41 IP. Schumer has had a couple of nice recent starts and may be on the come. None of the hitters have been terribly impressive yet, although Lollis (316/377/453) has smacked 8 doubles already. The entire bullpen looks to be solid; Osich's ERA stands at 0.00 after 8 appearances.
4. Augusta -- Crick(1.66 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 27K in 21.2 IP) looks like the real deal, he'll be fun to watch all year and might end up finishing the season in SJ. Bandilla/Escobar/Marlowe all look to be good young arms; we'll see how they fare stretching out. Especially keep an eye on Banilla -- he can blow the ball past hitters. One potential bust out hitter to watch is Payne (337/472/500), a nice OF prospect. The bullpen at this level isn't anything special, with perhaps the exception of Couture (1.89 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 15K in 15.2 IP).

Overall, we've the Giants move from a pitching cycle (Cain, Timmy, Bum, Weez, Romo, Runzler) to a hitter cycle (Panda, Buster, Belt, Nate, Baby Panda, Kieschnick, Peguero, Brown, Panik, ToJo, Dominguez) and now back to more of a pitcher cycle (Crick, Escobar, Marlowe, Bandilla, Snodgrass, Schumer, Hembree, Bochy, Rosin, Couture). There's overlap, of course, but I think in the near term we should expect to see some good young hitters and in the medium term some more good young pitchers.

The only good young MLB hitters on that list I see are Panda and Buster.
Belt and the rest the jury is still very undecided. But your main point is valid about the alternating waves.

Oh, agreed. Most won't pan out. I was merely pointing out the waves.

Or in the hitters case, the flatline before Pablo and Posey.

Quit your pantshatting.

In the grand scheme of things, is 20 years REALLY a long time?

Oh pales in comparison than say, waiting 50+ years for something

My ulterior motive was hoping for my Tony Torcato baseball card to appreciate in value

Another misguided Grant Brisbee rant:

But if you want some context for those numbers up there, just keep muttering: "The Giants want Brandon Belt to be a little more like Brett Pill. The Giants want Brandon Belt to be a little more like Brett Pill. The Giants want Brandon Belt to be a little more like Brett Pill." Then look at those yearly OBP numbers. Look at the swings out of the strike zone every year. How does such a thing happen?

The Giants want Brandon Belt to be a little more like Brett Pill. And the beliefs driving that desire are the beliefs that guide their every move. It's how they evaluate hitters. That's how those numbers happen, even when the roster turns over completely. The Giants want Brandon Belt to be a little more like Brett Pill. Oh.

Idiotic, really. This all comes from a Baggs article about Pill learning to be a little better "Brett Pill" in the minor leagues, while Belt is going to have to learn how to be a little better "Brandon Belt" at the major league level. And, if missing the point wasn't enough of a bad, then there is the statistical evidence that undermines your thesis:

..................wOBA
Pablo Sandoval....0.392
Melky Cabrera.....0.391
Buster Posey .....0.341
Brett Pill........0.339
Nate Schierholtz..0.333
Angel Pagan.......0.328
Gregor Blanco.....0.315
Brandon Belt......0.309
Joaquin Arias.....0.274
Hector Sanchez.…..0.271
Manny Burriss…....0.239
Brandon Crawford..0.238
Ryan Theriot …... 0.172

Pill......fewer AB, fewer back to back AB, but still putting up better numbers than Belt.

From the Brandon Belt page at mickopedia.org:

In August 2011, Belt was given the oul' nickname "The Baby Giraffe" by Giants announcer Duane Kuiper, who commented that Belt looked like the feckin' animal when trackin' down a feckin' fly ball in left field durin' a holy game against the oul' Milwaukee Brewers.[7] The nickname stuck and Belt became a bleedin' fan favorite in San Francisco, with "Baby Giraffe" hats rivalin' the bleedin' number of "Panda" hats in the feckin' stands at AT&T Park in September 2011. Here's another quare one for ye. Six Flags Marine World even named a holy real baby giraffe after Belt.[8]
