I am sitting here watching a show about Marty on the NFL Network. He coached four teams, Cleveland, KC, Washington and San Diego. Three of the four teams were greatly improved during his tenure. The Redskins were only 8-8 but finished there last 11 games 8-3 and I believe were heading in the right direction. All four teams crashed when he left. You can only wonder what would have happened had he been here 5-7 years.

Wasn't the knock on him that he could get your team going in the right direction.. perhaps even close to greatness.. but just not get you over the final hump? I sometimes wonder too what the Redskins would have been like if he stayed longer.

dad, the shanahans were the first to use the read option so heavily and that was all for Robert so saying they did not play to his strengths is just plain wrong.
how
Griffin was getting sacked too much with max protection and running two man routes, what do you think would have happened to him if they used four WRs. He locks onto to the 1st receiver and doesn't read defenses worth a crap.

There is truth in what you some of what you say but not about the offense and how it effects Griffin.

As far as not liking what Snyder has done and how he has handled this team, it's not an option. I don't live in Michigan or some other state. Washington has been my home for 50 years, this is my home town team. I am not going to back a shitty owner anymore than I am going to become a fan of another team.

You are a military guy dad and you understand chain of command. The E-1s don't eat with the Generals then expect them to listen when the E-9 tells them to go stand a watch etc. Dan has picked a favorite player throughout his ownership. I can promise you none of those relationships ended well.

stop with the chain of command hogwash . you arent "banned " from speaking to a general as a private . generals DO eat with Privates and privates do listen to e -9 's because they control your life more directly then the occasional generals visit . generals want to know what the common soldier is thinking

you act like generals NEVER have heard a soldiers gripe and that they take it as sworn gospel and that they will force a change . unless we are talking about unlawful acts it doesnt happen in fact its a plus for most military leaders to be talked bad about it tells the general what kind of leader he has

this isnt your fathers military anymore either . soldiers are better educated and they wont simply "take the hill " simply because they are ordered too . you better let them know "why "

and stop with the military chain of command nonsense . a football team is a civilian run enterprise not a dictatorship . players arent mindless robots who follow people blindly nor are american troops .

you take what Rg3 is accused of doing or what you have seen and take it one way while i take it another

what if shanahan did promise that ? and who cares about all in for week one ? derrick rose made commercials with that type of theme . and whats wrong with setting the goal . the coach decides who plays and who doesnt and shanny has just proven he will sit RG3 so enough of the pressure BS

when Rg3 was given time he went thru progressions . we didnt use many of the weapons he had afforded to him and the hurry up offense is something he excels at yet we rarely ran it even though we did it well

simply running the read option witha qb who isnt as explosive as he needs to be to make it work isnt playing to his strengths

the offensive ranking arent much different now then when Rg3 was playing . KC plays about the same but he does it a different way

Marty was underappreciated every where he coached until he left

His Cleveland teams were a Drive and a Fumble away from the Super Bowl

This is the way I remember it ... Marty was a top tier coach, but never got the job done. The fact that he coached in Cleveland & KC and the talent/execution that goes along with it should not be dismissed. You're not getting top tier FA in KC & Cleveland, yet he was able to throw together respectable teams. Which is why Marty was a great coach & HoF worthy.

Marty was replaced because Dan did not want him in control of the front office... and thought Vinny was an upgrade ?!?

This is the single decision that Dan will never live down.

10 years later... & we're facing the same issue. This organization desperately needs a GM ... but, if Dan is just going to select another Vinny, uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!

I think the best part of this episode of "A Football Life" is divisiveness between Darrell Green & Marty.

I think it deserves it own thread ... and it very much applies to what is happening with players today.

On a side note, but also the same issue, I watched part 1 of the Lombardi episode where Vince was having the same issue Marty was having with Green.

Frank Gifford talks about how eventually Vince became one of the guys after he stopped treating the veterans like kids.

Difficult line coaches must walk with veterans between holding them accountable & treating them like men.

Darrell Green, one of my favorite Redskins ... hereing him talk about Marty made me think less of Darrell. At the same time I tought back and remembered Darrell had been known to resist coaching even before Marty. He could play on his speed so he never really learned technique.

Knowing what we know about Dan it could never have worked with Marty. He would never have allowed Dan to have players in his office. It makes me sad as a fan to know that the same owner will make the same decisions in the next few days. Not because Shanahan will likely be gone because that relationship has apparently already soured. What we thought we had in Mike apparently we did not. dad said it well, forcing Marty's hand set the team back for years.

I wouldn't bet on that yet. These announcement "leaks" occur all the time, usually in an effort to get their real candidate to give in on some demands. Houston would be foolish to pick a head coach so early without an oppty to interview candidates on current NFL teams.

Hold the phone (I hope) O'Brien told two recruits yesterday who called him and inquired that he is not leaving Penn State.

I believe the Texans are the only team that can talk to anyone because they fired their coach. They have supposedly talked to Phillips and O'Brien. They have also said the interview process continues. They do have to interview a minority candidate. They may have already done that. Often times it's some assistant that has no shot but satisfies the rule.

I know for sure that two recruits whos signed LOI called O'Brien and he said he is not leaving. Does that mean he didn't lie to them? Don't know. Could be he is leveraging Penn State for more money. I also heard a report that someone in Happy Valley said Schiano would be pursued if he O'Brien leaves.

All I know for sure is two recruits called O'Brien because they have gone on record with that info.
