Mike Lange back on TV!

Going back to 1992, here is a kick in the nuts story. I had a Wheaties box with the Pens cup photo I bought and stored forever. I get married in 1999 and deploy with my unit shortly after. I am gone for 6 months and comeback to find my wife has eaten the 10 year old Wheaties. My dad sees her at the table crunching them down and says holy shit your husband is gonna kill you. I never let her forget it...

I still have that box of unopened Wheaties stored in my closet.

Ahhh, it feels so good to have Mike Lange back doing TV broadcasts. Oh, sorry, it's just the NHL Network re-airing of the 1991 SCF Game 6, but still.

Whew! I thought I was I was going to have to mute their broadcasts next year!

Homerism aside I just never cared for him, his meandering thoughts as the game was going, or his stupid catch-phrases.

As much bagging that we pens fans take during the FSN broadcasts during the season for Steiggy's horrible PBP, it is night and day when you listen to the quality of Lange's work.

While not great I think the newer guy is night and day better, I honestly do.

lange has begun to use the same ones over and over again...i think it's really just the first one that pops into his head. as i said earlier, each has some weird story. there are some he RARELY uses anymore. the game i play is 'guess the lange-sim!' after each goal...i'm rarely right.

I thought I read most of them were terms he learned in underground leather clubs he frequented in the 80s. I could be wrong though......

You are entitled to your own opinion, but I just flat out don't agree with you. Lange's PBP is light-years better than Steiggy's horrible, pathetic delivery. Are you sure you've heard Lange before? Or Steiggy, for that matter??

I don't think Steiggy is great, or above average really. I just think he is tons better than Lange was. I prefer PBP announcers to call the game, not talk about their dreams, their afternoons, or shout cartoonish catch phrases out when something happens.

Aside from the catch-phrases after goals, and every play-by-play guy does something unique now, I really don't get where you hear lange talking about that kind of stuff. If anything, that describes Steiggy to a T. Lange is a professional, Steiggy is JV. I'll have to agree to disagree with ya on this one, because i just don't see it. Steiggy is absolutely awful.

I wish Youtube was around when Lange spent 3 minutes one game during the action talking about his dream about Owen Nolan. And I don't think ever play by play guy does something similar to his catchphrases now.

Again I am not saying Steiggy is really good or I like him much. I just think he is much better than Lange.

Maybe if I grew up listening to Lange I'd like him. I really think Lange and Rick Jeanneret are the worst in the business, and those are the ones that people seem to get more upset about criticism of than any others.

Not only does Lange predict goals well, but it seems like every other game, he will call out who is going to score. He just knows who's going to get one. He's taught me a lot about the game.

Random memory: At Penguins fanfest awhile back (when we sucked), you got the opportunity to call a goal. Steiggy intro-ed you and then you called Kaspar's goal against Buffalo over the video. I remember I was totally going for Mike Lange...and I even used one of his catchphrases...I wonder if that pissed Steiggy off. Haha. They let you take the tape with you...pretty cool, though I don't know where it is now.

Errey is entertaining as hell. He's just crazy...he makes me laugh more than he annoys me and is good at spotting the little things. Steiggy is useless, annoying, awful.

You probably would. The guy has certainly not aged like a fine wine. And, I can see why fans of opposing teams would dis-like him. Lange's catch-phrases usually mock the opposition indirectly, and rightly so, i could see why opposing fans would not care for him.

But putting a two-bit hack like Steigerwald in front of him as being superior at his job... as a long-time Penguins fan... i find this laughable. It's not even close. Like I said, Lange might not have aged gracefully, but on his worst day, he's 10x better than Steiggy is on his best.
