Vin Scully is a legend, no doubt. My other favorites are Harry Caray, Bob Prince and Harry Kalas.

As far as greatest sports announcer in my book in any sport is Keith Jackson.

Old gunner... back when the Pirates were still a major-league ball club.

I have to admit, I grew up more with Lanny Frattare, so I like him a little better...and he was the guy during the "Family" years, so they were still a major-league club then too :)

But I recognize legend status in Prince and the other guys I mentioned.

Lanny was also more from my time, as well. But my pop is a huge pirate fan, and of course i know all about Bob. There was a time in Pittsburgh sports when the broadcasters were almost larger than life. Cope with the steelers, Prince with the Pirates and Lange with the Pens. I consider myself lucky to have grown up hearing those men do their work.

Yep, larger than life. And I feel it is a disservice to leave Lanny out of that list.

"There is noooooooo doubt about it" :)

Something tells me that we haven't been convincing to the outsiders, so here is exhibit A. Close your eyes and imagine the play:

Yea, I miss hearing Lanny. I know he battled a rough addiction to alcohol throughout his career, and I think it led to his retirement. Even though the buccos suck, it was always good to hear him. I have to admit, I still like to hear Steve Blass do his work in the booth when the buccos are at home.

Going back to 1992, here is a kick in the nuts story. I had a Wheaties box with the Pens cup photo I bought and stored forever. I get married in 1999 and deploy with my unit shortly after. I am gone for 6 months and comeback to find my wife has eaten the 10 year old Wheaties. My dad sees her at the table crunching them down and says holy shit your husband is gonna kill you. I never let her forget it...
