Mike Goldberg and the NHL?

I just read that Mike Goldberg (the commentator for the UFC with Joe Rogan) used to do play by play for the Detroit Redwings and Minny Wild? I dont care for him but had no idea he was in the hockey biz for a time. Was he any good at it?
