ESPN's Chris Mortensen stated on SportsCenter Friday that he's "heard more than twice" the 49ers could be "ready to do something big" in May's draft.

49ers GM Trent Baalke is working with 11 picks, including six selections in the top 100, so he has plenty of ammo to execute a trade up. Mort suggested the 49ers targeting Texas A&M WR Mike Evans, perhaps with a move into the top five. Mortensen said Oakland is "open for business" at No. 5 overall, and compared the hypothetical scenario to Atlanta's 2011 trade up for Julio Jones. Anquan Boldin is entering his age-34 season; Michael Crabtree is in a contract year.

As a resident of St. Louis, I'd love it if they paid their first, both seconds, and both thirds for #2. Otherwise it'd take their #1, higher #2, a #4, and next year's #1.

Both are pretty steep prices to pay when a pretty good WR will be sitting there at #30.

Michael Crabtree is in a contract year.

That's what this is truly about. Crabs demanded a Diva premium when he held out going into his rookie season and then after one really good year, blew out his Achilles which now makes him a much higher risk to resign if it happens again, that's a career ender. They may be already planning to cut bait as he'll probably demand to be made the highest paid WR of all time.

SF will give up a tremendous amount of draft power to move up to get him. But they could do it if they are really hard up on Evans. To move up to Sammy Watkins position would be a kings ransom. The type of fleece the Rams did on the Redskins.

I wouldn't put much stock in this report, while Balke has shown he is willing to move up in the first round Eric Reed last year turned out to be a good move, their are too many pressing needs to fill to move up to the top 10 and give up all our draft ammo. CB is a much more pressing need imo with Brown and Rogers gone and Culliver possibly facing league discipline. I could see them moving into the late teens or early twenty's to grab a guy they really like.

Evans is simply out of their reach without a Julio Jones type of trade

Draft range for Sammy Watkins is 2-5
Draft range for Evans is 5-10
Draft range of Beckham is 10-15 (as said by Kiper and McShay)
I think Cooks will go top 15 as well.

The question is whether or not WRs will drop. In the past, they always dropped. This year, Im guessing its the CBs that will drop

The 9ers will move up it's just a question of how far up they are willing to go. They have too many picks with a roster in need of impact rather than just solid players.

I think they can get as high as 11 with the Titans for 30, 56, and 77.

The Titans only have 6 picks, missing their 3rd rounder (which the 9ers happen to possess), and 2 additional day 2 picks would benefit them more than picking at 11.

And from the 9ers side they would still have a 2nd round pick and two 3rd rounders when it's all said and done.

I'm sure SF would love to get the burner they are lacking at WR, but seriously their biggest need for year now is CB and a true FS that can roam and defend middle deep in the long run.

It's a deep draft at WR talent this draft so they really don't have to bet the farm on a Watkins or Evans. It's so expensive to trade anywhere around the top 10 picks. Ask the Redskins about that.

I'm sure SF would love to get the burner they are lacking at WR, but seriously their biggest need for year now is CB and a true FS that can roam and defend middle deep in the long run.

It's a deep draft at WR talent this draft so they really don't have to bet the farm on a Watkins or Evans. It's so expensive to trade anywhere around the top 10 picks. Ask the Redskins about that.

CB is a bigger need but WR is a pretty close second.

It was glaring obvious against Seattle they needed a burner that could stretch the field along with Davis to stretch defenses and force them to back off the line.

I can't see them going into the top 10 to grab Evans but I could see them being players at #11 on down to grab Beckham or possibly Cooks.

When it comes to CB I think they are pretty confident they could grab one in the 2nd and coach him up because Donatell is one of the best in the business when it comes to coaching up the secondary.

Totally disagree with the notion that the Niners need a FS given that Reid was a Pro Bowler as a rookie while amassing ZERO penalties and playing great ball most of the year.

If you want to make the case that a long term solution at SS is a need, I would agree but the signing of Bethea makes the need less urgent, certainly not for a 1st rd pick.

That is where Tank Carradine comes in. The Niners drafted him last year in the 2nd and MANY draft guys considered him a top 10 pick prior to injury. I could see us nabbing a Ealy or Hageman if they drop to the 2nd.

I actually think Justin Smith has regressed from his prime a small bit. He still makes that defense tick but Bowman is their best player for sure.

The best way to beat Seattle's defense (well any great defense for that matter) is to stretch them thin and stress them as much as possible.

So it wouldn't just be shutting down Watkins or Evans but also having to worry about Crabtree, Davis, Boldin, the running game, and Kap running the ball as well.

And that's not to say Seattle's defense couldn't juggle all of that but the odds are higher that a defense will screw up when the more they have on their plate to worry about.
