OK. I'll buy that argument. But I would think that the deferred money would come from the original team, much like the St-Rangers are still on the hook for AFraud's deferred dollars.

I suppose the deferred cash can be negotiated either way. The more of it you pick up, the better deal you get. So if the G's didn't pick up the $15MM, I'd imagine they'd have to give up a prospect to get your deal done.

One more thought: The St-Rangers are moving Josh Hamilton to LF to cut down on the wear and tear he receives, so the only CF players they have right now are Julio Borbon and some career minor leaguer named Craig Gentry. Borbon is fast as hell, but can't hit to save his life. If he tanks, the Rangers will definitely need someone to come in and fill the void. That's where Rowand comes in. Dude is a CF who can play RF (when Nelson Cruz inevitably ends up on the DL). He would be insurance for two positions.

How about if the Rangers trade Young for Rowand straight up and toss in a prospect to convince the Giants to eat the last year of his deal. Or they could make a 1-for-1 and offer to pay half of the final year on Young's deal. So The Giants would only be on the hook for (assuming not deferred money) $8 mil total.

I really think the Giants are going to need that $12-16MM in 2013. Cain and Chez will be FAs, and Weez, Panda, Romo, and Timmy will be due arb raises if not outright bought out. Also, I don't think Young will be of value to any NL team by 2013...he's really fading.

From MLBTradeRumors:

The Rockies would have given up a pair of solid prospects and were to take on about $20MM of Young's contract. But then the Rangers missed out on free agent DH targets and at this time want more from the Rockies.

that kind of gives us a market value for Young. Assuming that two solid prospects >> Rowand, we'd have to take on considerably MORE than $20MM in salary.

Wow. I vastly underestimated Young's trade value. Either that, or the stupidity of the GMs around the league. If that's really the Rangers' asking price, then by all means, let the Rockies have him.

It's nuts...Beltre got way too much as did Werth. I'm really hoping that the Giants NEVER go out and get a premium FA; they're just way too overpriced. Now, spending good cash to keep our own.....

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal:

The Dodgers asked the Rangers to eat 75 percent of Michael Young's remaining contract during trade talks this week.
In other words, the Dodgers wanted Texas to eat $36 million of the three years and $48 million left on Young's current deal. That's absolutely insane, but also indicative of how other teams view the 34-year-old infielder. He is not a good defender and he has not produced at a high rate offensively away from the power-friendly confines of the Rangers' Ballpark in Arlington. Texas might just be forced to hang on to him this season and Young will have to try to paint a smile on his face when he makes his way to Rangers camp later this month.

There HAS to be some organization that can lend a helpful hand to these guys making 16M a year who are unable to "paint a smile on [their] face". This is just tragic for him and his family...

What about Pujols?

Off topic, but I was watching Baseball Tonight and Buster Onley mentioned that IF (in the HIGHLY unlikely situation) Albert were to hit the free agent market that the Giants would be one of 5 teams likely to have intrest, along with the Dodgers, Mets, Angeks and Cubs.

Now, obviously pure speculation, but, going with what you just said, if Albert hit the market and was interested in us, would you make an exception for him?

It depends upon the price. $300MM....no. And the Yankee$, Red $ox or Cub$ would pony up that type of scratch.

So to answer: probably not.

I have to agree. Outside of Bonds, what big FA signing have we made that turned out to be successful?

I would say the G's have made a total of 3 MAJOR FA signings through their history: Bonds, Rowand, Zito. Only Bonds would be considered any kind of success in that list.

Semi-major FA signings: Matheny (bust); Molina (OK); Morris (bust); Burks (good); McGee (good); Butler ([cough]good[cough]); Alfonso (bust); Huff (GREAT); Rent (bust until the last month of his contract - overall GREAT); Vizquel (OK)...

Basically, the G's have had a decent amount of success in going after the second-tier FA and not very good success when they try for the HR. Even Bonds COULD be considered a bust since they spent the next 15 years building the team around him with only 1 NL Pennant to show for it.

Bonds was in no way, shape or form a bust. He was the best ball player of his era. Methany was an unfortunate injury, not a bust. Otherwise I agree.

From MLBTradeRumors:

The Marlins appear to view Young as a $6-7MM player, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (on Twitter). They could want more than $30MM in salary relief in possible trades with Texas.

I think the Fish have Young's value pegged about right.

You realize, of course, I was not calling Bonds a bust. I was just saying that since he became the centerpiece of the org, and the org failed to do anything with it, the argument COULD be made that it was a bust of a move.

Bonds is the GOAT. No arguing that.

While I agree, the Marlins, as you know, can't afford to pay those types of players so this could just be a way for them to drive his price down.
