I am waiting for the PFT story on this where Florio gets on his soapbox for the next two weeks.

But seriously, I think this will both help & hurt his draft stock depending the organization.

I'm sure Florio dreams of a gay player coming out against the Redskins name.

He's been "out" for a year. School knew. Friends knew. Teammates knew. Said he wants to own his truth.http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/02/1...is-gay-ahead-of-nfl-draft.html?_r=0&referrer=

Friends and teammates knowing is just fine, if they asked. I don't understand why the school needs to know, and I don't understand why he has to go on ESPN and let the world know. Other than for publicity.

Privacy goes both ways. I got off Facebook a long time ago because I started to become more concerned with coming across some of the very private and personal info everyone else was willing to share than anyone seeing my own. There's just some shit not everybody needs to hear about no matter how much you feel the need to share it.

Yeah, you dont have straight people going out of their way proclaiming to the world their sexual preference. This guy is just looking for attention.

Coaches at the University of Missouri divided players into small groups at a preseason football practice last year for a team-building exercise. One by one, players were asked to talk about themselves — where they grew up, why they chose Missouri and what others might not know about them.

That 'exercise' probably made him gay.

Good point. He told his team in August so why not make it public then?

I think the answer to this is pretty obvious.

Yes he told his brothers on his team and his friends and family.

Then he got to the Senior Bowl where there's a fuck ton of national media who's job it is to start digging for dirt and personal information on these NFL prospects. The media sharks began to circle so he acknowledged it and by doing so he kept it from becoming a bigger deal.

IMO a "no comment" from him probably doesn't work out so well.

It's ultimately going to hurt his draft stock not because he's gay but because teams have shown time and time again they don't want to deal with distractions or potential problems.

Teams are going to look at the Johnathan Martin case and go "We don't want that and we don't want to risk it. Pass." And if I'm a player in the locker room I'm keeping my distance not because he's gay but because I don't want to be potentially the next Incognito and say something that will get blown way out of proportion and get labeled every foul thing you can imagine and become a pariah.

Which is why the whole thing is funny because the media champions the cause for gay athletes but they are actually the main reason none of them want to come out and be openly gay.

I heard that several potential draftees are heterosexual but they don't make a big deal out of it.

That is pretty impressive that the Missouri team kept their mouthes shut

Im assuming that is how it worked out. I doubt he wanted to have a 1,000 j school students interview him at once but once you get to the NFL draft process then the media will get everything.

Maybe this will give Aaron Rodgers the confidence to finally come out

What will really be interesting is to see when Aaron Rodgers and Michael Sam go up against each other....

How many times will Rodgers end up suspiciously on the ground with Sam on top of him?
