The Official Week 20 Preview
Playoff time is near! There are many contests this week with playoff implications. Although nobody has been officially eliminated from the playoffs yet, it appears more and more likely that the top 7 in the standings are fighting for 6 spots. TKO is currently the odd man out. The battle for next year's first pick rages on between Sam and Jim, although if I had to guess, I think that one is an academic exercise. Sam, the Angels fan is likely to take Trout first, while I doubt Jim would pass on Miggy.
On to the games:
This week, we have 3 features match-ups centered around the 4 teams battling for playoff lives. Sarnia, the Salamis and Chef all appear playoff bound barring an epic collapse.
Featured Match #1:
3rd Place Soggy Bottom Boyz vs. 6th Place Yellow Fuzzy- Fuzzy 6, Soggy 3
Although Soggy may have the better record, the match-up this week clearly slants toward the Fuzzies. Fuzzy needs a good result as they cling to the last play-off spot. Interestingly enough, if the regular season had ended today, these two teams would be facing off in round 1 of the playoffs.
When they last played, the Soggy Ones pulled out a close one, 5-4.
Pitching- Most pitching categories are going to be very close. Soggy is a near lock to win the K category with 2 extra starts and some serious strikeout artists on the roster. Fuzzy should win the save category and has a mild edge in WHIP too. ERA and wins could be determined by the performance of Soggy's struggling 2 start aces: Samardzija, Haren and Zimmermann.
Hitting- All of the hitting categories will be close, but HRs are the only one that is too close to predict. Soggy has the edge in SBs, and Fuzzy should win Runs, RBI and BA.
Featured Match # 2:
4th Place WHIP my FIP vs. 7th Place TKOut- TKO 5, WHIP 3
Again, the lower seed gets the edge over the higher one. WHIP continues to hang on to his playoff spot despite very limited activity. Although he is on the outside looking in at the moment, TKO is firmly in control of his own destiny with games against teams ahead of him in the standings all 3 weeks. In addition to this week's game, he plays the two teams tied for 5th, Fuzzy and Fud over the last 2 weeks. This game could be close, or it could be a blowout in favor of TKO.
When they last played, TKO knocked out WHIP 7 - 3.
Pitching- Literally, anything can happen here. TKO has the edge in Ks with 2 extra starts along with a very slight advantage in saves and wins. Either team could win 4 of the 5 pitching cats. WHIP could even miss the innings minimum with a tough week since he only has 4 starts. Any short outings from his starters could spell doom in this huge match-up.
Hitting- TKO's elite hitting squad will be tested this week. He has the clear advantage in both HRs and RBI, but runs, SBs and BA are all going to be swing categories.
For those counting at home, that is a total of 7 swing cats in this potential pivotal match-up.
Featured Match-up #3:
1st Place Sarnia Tigers vs. 5th Place Fudpuckers- Sarnia 8, Fud 2
Fud's team is solid, but they clearly drew the short stick this week. Sarnia's team is firing on all cylinders and looking like the heavy favorites to take down the title. Fud will need a big week to hold his ground in the standings.
Pitching- Sarnia is normally very hard to beat on the pitching side, but with 5 of his aces going twice, he may be unbeatable this week. ERA, WHIP, wins and Ks should all go Sarnia's way. Saves should be close as Houston Street continues to pitch well and he has been getting plenty of save ops. Each team has 2 closers.
Hitting- Fud has a definite advantage in SBs, but HRs, runs and RBI may all go to the Tigers. BA could go either way. Fud is going to need some unexpected power production to win this match-up.
Grand Salami vs. D Dude's Dodgers- Salami 7, Dude 2
When they last met, the Salamis won 6-3.
Pitching- With both sides sending out 7 SPs, wins are up for grabs. The Salamis have the edge in saves with the extra closer. K's, ERA and WHIP should also go to the Salamis.
Hitting- Runs, HRs and SBs should all go to the Salamis. RBI and BA are too close to call.
Dub vs. Sportsboys- Boys 6, Dub 4
When they last played, the Boys won 7-2.
Pitching- ERA and WHIP are too close to call here. Saves will go to Dub, while wins and Ks should go to the Boys. The Boys have 6 more starts than Dub this week.
Hitting- Dub is a virtual lock to win SBs over the speed challenged Boys. The Boys counter with advantages in the power categories. Runs and BA could go either way.
Wolfpack vs. Big League Chew- Pack 6, Chew 4
Big League is not out of the race, but they need to handle their business against the last place Pack. Unfortunately, the Pack are no easy win.
When they last played, Chew won 7-3.
Pitching- Chew has the better staff, but the Pack have a whopping 13 starts this week. He is a near lock to win Wins and Ks. Chew should get everything else.
Hitting- The Pack could sweep the hitting side. He has edges in BA, HR, RBI and SBs. BA is too close to call.
Good luck to those battling for playoff spots! Enjoy week 20.
