Matt Cain of San Francisco Giants to meet with Dr. James Andrews - ESPN

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco Giants right-hander Matt Cain plans to meet with specialist Dr. James
Andrews this week to get a second opinion on his injured elbow.

Cain flew Tuesday to Florida, where he will be examined by Andrews. Cain, who has been on the disabled list since July 21 due to inflammation in his pitching elbow, will rejoin the team in New York on Friday.

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said having Cain get evaluated by Andrews is a precautionary move. He added that surgery has not yet been discussed.

Cain (2-7) has struggled all season. The one-time ace has a 4.18 ERA and has not pitched since July 9, when he went six innings to beat the Oakland Athletics.

The Giants last week acquired pitcher Jake Peavy from Boston for two minor league prospects.

Cain might be seriously injured. But I always get the feeling that Andrews is going to diagnose TJ no matter what. I mean my god how many have there been the last year +? And why wouldn't he? Andrews makes more money that way.

Kind of a cynical way of looking at it, but that's my theory for all these sudden TJ cases (over diagnosis).

I have been edging towards this belief myself the last month or so. However, I am SOOO ignorant on the subject that I never thought to post about it.

I just call it like I see it. Almost as bad as a KNBR caller.

Cain will NOT need TJ surgery, but he is considering arthroscopic elbow surgery. Recovery for that is usually in the "weeks" terms, so he could return for a post season run if he had the surgery, but I would still find it unlikely. Let him rehab and come back strong next season.

Color me surprised, and thankful!
