Justin Smoak should absolutely not be considered the starting 1B when he comes back, but Morrison's also gonna have to show more consistency than 1 great game to give anyone a sense of confidence in that position.

Well said.

Morrison has done well since June 12, (.269 BA 4 HRs), but he's still carrying a .215 BA. Morrison needs to earn his starting spot, if he keeps hitting you leave him in there, but if he slows down he should be replaced.

That being said, I really hope he keeps hitting. The Mariners look a lot better when they've got production from 1B.

I can be snarky with them because I have watched them for 37 years and a few good months won't convince me they are legit. I always pull for them, but when ownership doesn't back them even in the good times (and we have a history of that happening) then I am not holding my breath that they spend more at the end of next month to support a chance of this team making the playoffs.

I will have more faith in them when ownership does, but until then I will enjoy the wins and gripe at the loses that might have been avoidable if we spent a little more on a hitter or two.

Agree that Morrison hasn't earned anything yet. I just think the main reason for them being so patient with Smoak has been there are no viable alternatives. You may have a guy that can challenge him now and at the very least there should be a competition now.

Maybe we finally have legit reason not to keep running Smoak out in the field. One can hope anyway

Morrison is still (statistically) Smoak without the defense. If anything, LOMO may be showing he should get time at DH and a little at first once Smoak comes back.

Game 2 is 15 minutes away. Ramirez needs to show he can go more than five innings consistently. He went 6 against easily the worst hitting team in baseball last week, but he's gotta do it consistently against better competition. That means limiting the walks and full counts to keep that pitch count down. Boston doesn't have a great offense this year, but it's the best one Ramirez has faced in a while and the most patient one he's faced since he pitched against Oakland last month. It'll be a decent test for him.

Didn't realize Erasmo is working on a 16.2 inning scoreless streak. Would like to see him cut down the walks as well, but as long as he's putting up zeros, he's giving us a chance to win.

Also saw a stat on mlb network about the team hitting something like .317 at home the last few games. Let's hope that continues against a very mediocre Jake Peavy tonight.

Well, he's walking a very dangerous Line with all these walks. Needs to establish his fastball because the hitters have zero interest in swinging the bat in the 1st.

Wiggled off the hook. Let's get some early runs and take some pressure off

The scoreless streak is good, but it's offset by the fact that it took him three starts to get it because he can't get deep into games. He's been lucky not to give up runs with all the walks he's been giving up and that luck has to run out at some point. Tonight's first inning is another example of that. He walked 3 and almost walked a 4th if it wasn't for a generous strike 3 on Napoli. He's already thrown almost 30 pitches after one inning and is on pace to be out before the 6th again.

I completely agree, and he is lucky to not give up more runs, but as long as he isnt, I'll certainly take it from our struggling #5 rotation spot.

Love the early runs, especially Lomo looking for the easy rbi there

Ok Erasmo, you have a 2 run lead. Use your fastball and show you can throw some strikes.

Better inning. Still want to see more fastballs to the guys who aren't going to take you deep at Safeco though.

Better inning that time from Ramirez, but he still appears to either be overthrowing or aiming the ball.

Great early at bats so far for the most part. Miller being patient and drawing the walk then Endy ripping a hanger for an rbi triple.
