Don't think that deal gets it done for Stanton. I know if I were the Marlins any deal for Stanton would have to include Walker.

And I think that's about the only possible deal involving Walker Jack should even contemplate.

Here's the thing I like about Cano and his ability to still produce late into his 7 year contract

He's a pure hitter. Not some guy who relies primarily on power or athleticism. Cano's sweet swing will always be with him. I can see him having a bit of a dip in power as he ages but in the latter years of his contract I could still see him hitting .290-.300 or higher.

I say go out there and do it. In this market 7 years 200 mil is more than fair especially considering that we are a crappy team trying to lure a big player. Only way to do is overpay and heck if the Mariners feel like they are rich in wealth (new root tv deal) then let them spend.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I wouldn't put this past the M's and they'll say at the end 'Well, we tried"

"Robinson Cano denied a 6 year contract worth 150 M from the Mariners"

that is lower than the reported 7 year 160 million he turned down from The Yankees.

Even without a source I believe this. It fits in perfectly with Lincoln and Z's bullshit that we've come to expect every year.

Yankees major players for Ellsbury...one hour later...Yankees sign Ellsbury

Mariners major players for Cano...three days later...*crickets*

I stuck the entire article in google translator and this is what came out....

Negotiations between second baseman Robinson Cano and the Seattle Mariners rallied to another level Thursday when the ballplayer took a private flight from New York to Seattle to talk personally with the club in the American League , a source told ESPNdeportes.com .

hoary
Cano
Could not determine the degree of closeness between the parties for a possible deal , but the source said the Mariners ESPNdeportes.com left Cano know who would be willing to pay between $ 230 and $ 240 million for the next 10 seasons .

It has been reported that Cano, who has played with the New York Yankees for his entire career , is seeking a 10-year contract and $ 250 and $ 260 million and the Yankees have not offered more than $ 170 million.

While New York is the winningest team in baseball history , Seattle does not advance to the postseason since 2001 and has never played in the World Series in its 37 year history.

Cano , 31 , is the best free agent available on the market. Second baseman finished fifth in voting for the MVP of the American League after hitting .307 with 27 homers and 107 RBIs. In nine seasons with the Yankees , Cano is batting .309 with 204 homers and 822 RBIs.

The five-time All-Star has received five Silver Sluggers and two Gold Gloves in his career.

Part of me wants to hate throwing a 10 year $240m contract at any one player but I am honestly so tired of mediocrity I'm willing to overpay for a great player instead of more of the same.

We gotta add 2 more bats though! No-go on Walker for Price.

Yea I understand I feel pretty much the same way. I guess you just have to look at it in terms of you are paying for more then just the on field performance. Its his marketability, profit through jersey sales and name recognition which will hopefully attract other free agents here. Even if its a 9 year deal and we only get 5 good years, Im ok with that. Tired of sitting back and hoping prospects pan out and signing 1 year stop gaps.

Exactly.

Plus I think this sends a message to the league that Seattle wants to compete. I think signing Cano alone makes Seattle much more attractive to other players.

Walker is probably the only guy I would not trade. I would be willing to trade Paxton but not Walker. I think Paxton could be good but I feel like Walker is a future #1. Although Paxton's solid first 4 starts make me feel differently.

I think at this point it's worth the risk if it means that this is a sign of things to come. It can't just be a splashy move to say they made a splashy move or a move made with the sole purpose of cashing in on his name recognition. The state of the franchise and the apathy and anger of the fanbase requires a move like this to be more than that.

It needs to be the first in a series of deals, both free agent and trade, to not only improve the roster but to signal to everyone, from the other teams in the league to the fans of the team, that the front office is no longer going to tolerate having the reputation of being the team that other teams use to gauge interest in a certain player, or the reputation of being the team that is too afraid to go as far as it needs to to attract big-time players (as the extension for Felix was a sign that this front office was tired of having the reputation as a team unable or unwilling to retain its own superstars). I don't want to be the team that "nobody wants to go to" anymore. If that means overpaying for a superstar still in his prime to get it done, so be it. It's time to take some risks.

Just got an updated on my SC Feed on my phone...

"Cano and his camp arrived in Seattle with what sources described as basically an 8 year deal for $200MM in hand and the assurances that Seattle would go to 9 years/$225MM. But when Jay-Z then upped the ante to 10 years/$252MM, Mariners president Howard Lincoln apparently 'exploded', according to one of the sources, and ended the meeting."

So there's that...

Jay-Z is such a fucking imbecile. Obviously amateur hour going on within Roc Nation sports or whatever Jay-Z's bush league agency is called.

Well looks like I was wrong on this one. The Mariners actually shelled out the dough for a free agent. Still really don't quite believe it. It's a lot of money, and Cano alone doesn't come close to fixing the myriad of problems the Mariners have. We'll see where the FO goes from here, but I'll continue to remain cynical.
