I mentioned it and thought maybe so but then I saw the Willie Bloomquist signing and I laughed at myself for even thinking about the possibility of us signing him.

Rumor: Seattle Mariners become 'major player' for Robinson Cano - CBSSports.com

There are rumors that the M's are in the hunt for Cano. What do you guys think? Maybe someone from Canos Camp is just trying to use the mariners as a chip to get the yanks to cough up more money also does this mean that the M's are dealing their INF prospects for the Matt Kemp and Dexter Fowler Rumor Trades?

I have a tough time believing the Mariners are actual players for Cano. On the flip side of that if the Cano camp was trying to use the Marines to drive the price up on Cano wouldn't they choose a team that was a little more realistic than the Seattle Mariners?

I also don't like the idea of trading Nick Franklin. I think the guy can play he has a lot of potential in my opinion and it would be a mistake to trade him. Then again Cano is a proven all star so its hard to argue with that and Franklin will never be the player Cano is even at his peak.

I honestly don't understand your negativity towards the Bloomquist signing. He is a utility player thats all you need to know.

It's unlikely. The Mariners have found themselves "in the mix" for a lot of major free agents over the years that they don't ultimately end up signing. If they do sign him, however, it has to be just one move in a series of moves to improve the lineup or there's no point in doing it. If they're going to go far enough to sign a guy for that kind of money, they need to go all-in and pull off some bold moves in addition to it to make something happen.

Agree! The Mariners have many holes and unfortunately signing Cano may make it difficult to add more players because of money. Unless payroll is increased.

They were "serious" in many big names before too remember? lol.

One thing this Mariners are good at in the off-season is being attached to big name players. How many did they reeled in?

I'd be shock if Cano signs here.

I could actually imagine them signing Cano and then nobody else of note for the next 8 years.

I thought the same thing. They'd probably trade Felix next offseason too.

Im not honestly trying be negative on purpose but we heard this last year with Josh Hamilton and the year before with Prince Fielder. Its like wash, rinse, repeat at this point. I gotta see it to believe. As of now there is no reason to believe it.

During this time of year, there's always a lot of noise from the Mariners regarding big name players, but there's really nothing to show for. I honestly believe that they're trying to get those players, but perhaps players just refused to come here.

On a noise related note: Mariners are reportedly in on Beltran as well.

And I am in on Kate Upton. So far no response.

Mariners Met With Robinson Cano Yesterday

By Steve Adams [December 4, 2013 at 1:39pm CST]
The Mariners met with Robinson Cano's representatives yesterday, according to Kevin Kernan of the New York Post. Kernan's source told him that the meeting "went very well."
Seattle has recently emerged as a major player in the Cano sweepstakes according to recent reports, and Kernan notes the club's long history of finishing as the runner-up to coveted big-name free agents. The Mariners "want to do everything in their power to come up a winner this time around," writes Kernan.
Cano's asking price has reportedly come down into the $250-260MM range, but an enormous gap still remains between that figure and the Yankees' reported offer of $160-175MM. Kernan adds that Cano will likely have to choose between millions of extra dollars to venture to a new team like the Mariners or the familiarity of returning to the Yankees in what should be an elite lineup. The Yankees have already signed Brian McCann and last night agreed to a seven-year pact with Jacoby Ellsbury.
Earlier today, Andy McCullough of the Star Ledger heard that the Yankees are still not interested in going beyond $200MM or seven years to retain Cano (Twitter link).

This is the problem with the M's F.O. If you want Cano so bad, get him signed. Don't let his people leave until a deal is done. Other teams don't seem to have a problem with this concept.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I wouldn't put this past the M's and they'll say at the end 'Well, we tried"

"Robinson Cano denied a 6 year contract worth 150 M from the Mariners"

that is lower than the reported 7 year 160 million he turned down from The Yankees.

They would not be the first nor the last to go this lame ass route.

Not to get or sound all Yoda, but trying is nice, but doing is better.

While we are kicking things around with this Cano business, how about this...If they sign Cano (I personally don't believe a word of it), do think it is even on JZ's radar to go all in to try to trade for Stanton? Pipe dream, I know. But for giggles, maybe a package around Paxton, Franklin and Pederson to get the ball rolling would get talks started.

I'd feel good about the Cano deal and probably hate the Kemp deal. Jack Z tends to get owned on trades. For every Cliff Lee deal (getting Lee) he's had 5 Cliff Lee deals (getting Smoak and the rest of that worthless package).

Don't think that deal gets it done for Stanton. I know if I were the Marlins any deal for Stanton would have to include Walker.
