"I have an obligation to the people who own this baseball team, an obligation to make money, to operate in a profitable fashion. Doing that, we expect to put the best product we can on the field, and I think we have accomplished that over the last two years."

"You can go to the Series two ways; first, go for it regardless of the financial risk or consequences, the way Cleveland or Florida has; or go for it with a competitive team that plays for championships on a continual basis. The objective of the Seattle Mariners is not to go to the World Series regardless of the financial consequences, that is irresponsible."

I love these quotes from Jerry Dipoto...Oh wait these are Howard Lincoln from 2002. Owner's today were part of ownership then. Nothing has changed. Nothing will change. Blueprint established decades ago.

What’s funny is when Nintendo was majority owner they would actually make go for it moves. But just as now they somehow built a potential WS team if they’d just make 1 or 2 more go for it moves

What is even more funny is Nintendo had no say in the operations of their own team and that turned out to be the best ownership in M's history. LOL!

I don't like it much. It leaves the Mariners on the hook for $59 million of Arenado's salary over the next three years. Unfortunately, this is not a golden era for third basemen. There just aren't that many good ones right now.

Then again, there aren't that many good second basemen either. Hoerner and India were good targets. Royals got India. Hoerner is still out there. https://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/stats/...ECOND_BASE&qualified=FALSE&sortStatId=AT_BATS
Agreed. There was nothing to talk about in M's reality so I threw it out there for something to do. Haniger and more money would have to be included coming back to even consider it. Aside from the money, I am not sure how much more you could get for Woo than a former All-Star and a starting pitcher. Woo is young and pitched well, better at home, but has also had 2 injury scares and has had major history in the recent past. I think he is a ticking time bomb ready to go off maybe this season. He worries me the most.

You trade Woo for someone in their prime, not a 33 year old. Regardless M's ownership would never take on his contract.

Yet another off-season of fucking nothing from this shit ownership.
Prime would be preferred, but not sure likely. Rare a team trades a talented guy in his prime and if he is talented do you trade him for Woo with his injury history? I think you might get guys with limited experience back for him say Gorman or Nootsbar type using Cards as an example.

I am mixed on Arenado. Money aside, he would be a big improvement over what Rojas gave us last year. I also think it is about a 1% chance of it happening. Just something to fill the Mariners news void. :)

Bring back Brendon Ryan!
There is a blast from the past. Played back in the day we didn't have to worry about the M's spending money because they were so bad it didn't matter. Oh I am starting to miss those times.

He would've fit right in with these teams... Couldn't hit the broad side of the barn...

I still just don’t get how they have the payroll they currently have yet still don’t have a starting 1B, 2B, 3B or DH. Makes sense if any of their core guys were making great money but they aren’t. I’m not excusing ownership but just seems weird so much local media venom is at ownership when Jerry has constructed this payroll with 4 young cheap SP’s, a cheap bullpen, and for fairly cheap starting position players collectively

SI:

Here is a hypothetical mock trade to send Arenado to the Mariners:

Cardinals receive: Right-handed pitcher Bryan Woo

Mariners receive: Third baseman Nolan Arenado, Left-handed pitcher Matthew Liberatore, and $5 million
Pass. No way they should give up a prime pitcher for an aging 3B.
