This move to me, doesn't really move the needle. The Mariners still need to sign/acquire two starters for next year.

And did I read this correctly that Mariners are sending international signing pool money to the Cards too?

I don't know that cap numbers so correct me if I'm wrong, but Gallardo & Iwakuma coming off the books should covers Leakes salary for next year with a couple million left over?

Yes which leaves the question is he the only upgrade using up the money or will they add to payroll? If they didn't add him, would they have used that money for someone else next year? This is why I never just judge a Mariners trade on players involved because like in this case we gave up nothing but the bigger question is the money added. Life of a Mariners fan...you must always read the fine print.

No the Cards are sending to us because they can't use it because of their cheating on the Astros.

Oh I just have misread that then. I don't understand the new pool thing so does that give the Mariners a leg up in signing international players?

Ya that is not my thing either. Seems every year other teams spend ten's of millions on IP's and we spend very little.

Whether it DOES give us a leg up on that still has yet to be seen, but don't be surprised if that leg turns up lame.

Oh for sure. If by opening day we can look back at Leake as an "in addition to" trade then it's a win. If we still have a glaring hole or two in the rotation heading into opening day with a couple of fill in's then it's clear he became a road block.

I've already put my foot in my mouth with a certain other trade with the Cardinals this year, not doing it again. No benefit of the doubt for JeDi on this one.

Except if the $38M anchor gets in our way of signing talent.

I think the money we will be paying him is roughly equivalent to what we'd have to pay on the free agent market for a pitcher of his age and resume. I essentially look at this as a free agent signing since we didn't give anything up for him.

If he is the type of SP we are going to try and sign for $13M per next year, then I might as well just skip the season all together and just wait for the Hawks to start up. That would be the saddest off season in our sad, sad history.

i posted a link last month to the available FA pitchers for next season.

pickings are super slim.

i thought jedi had a 2+ year plan for building up the farm so he could create attractive trade packages since there's such a dearth of talent in FA. but nope, he gave up just about everything decent from the past 18 months of farming for the equivalent of a huge pile of shit in an idiotic stab at trying to make the playoffs this year.

took a whole year and half to figure out we're in for more of the same. instead of owners making bank who clearly don't actually give a fuck, now we have owners who pretend they give a fuck. not sure which is worse.

I actually think we have owners that give a fuck, but don't have a fucking clue how to run a major league baseball team. They handed the keys over to an ego maniac thats trying to make up for lost time, and not Mariners lost time, but his own lost time since he couldn't coexist with a World Series manager. Instead he throws in coach dad, who to his defense has never even coached in baseball, and decides to try and surround our few stars with average talent at best. Aside from going out and getting Segura he hasn't netted us anyone close to an all-star level. This is on JeDi more than anyone, and hopefully that duffus Stanton has a short leash on him cause next year doesn't work here anymore.

Dipito is so bad at pitching evaluations... Leake isn't any better than Miranda..
