I hope the Kings are looking forward to that cap recovery penalty in a few years.

No way he plays to age 39 with his injury history.

He'll probably retire during the contract and the cap hit will go away, so this is good because he hasn't turned 35 yet - better to give him the long term deal now instead of giving him 3 years and then if you give him another contract at 35 you would be on the hook from then on

Seven years seems a bit excessive but the cap hit is nice. I am guessing they added a couple of years to bring the cap hit down.

Dreger confirms:

DarrenDreger: "@kevin_mcgran: gaborik at $4.9M cap-hit sets bar for Vanek, Moulson etc." Dave Bolland is believed to be seeking similar AAV on 8 yr term.

I almost suffocated laughing when I read that.

Then I realized it was serious and did it again.

Then I realized he's in Toronto so he'll probably get it. Paramedics had to revive me after that.

That pretty much covers it.

But damn, I would love to have Gabby back at that money.

7 years? Hell, he's only played 2 consecutive full seasons.

This deal could potentially be Dipietro-esque.

There's a big potential for this to be a really bad deal...but gotta play the risks I guess?
