The NBA made a poor choice, and a poor contract, and were forced to live with it. If I were these guys I wouldn't settle. That contract was ironclad and could have lasted as long as the league did.

dude you dont know that. they may be getting older and trying to do estate planning. nothing gets complicated like contractual debt payments to a dead man. they are getting a decent lump sum in which they can invest and potentially make more. ive heard of this before, they had the NBA over a barrel, im sure the deal works out for both parties.

True, they could be looking to get out now and get it all squared away. Seems like they could do some estate planning if they wanted to, but a somewhat clean cut is probably best.

Thats residual money they were getting from the contract. They may have bigger goals on the horizon that a lump sum would make for a more lucrative opportunity.
