No links atm, but Shulman is saying 5 years with options for 2018-19
This means that the Giants don't have to buckle under to Timmy's agent's demands for a new contract, which likely means that Timmy won't be back after 2013.
First part of sentence seems right, the second part seems overdone IMO. I don't think it means it's LIKELY he's gone in 2013. It might increase the odds some, but I still think there's a 50/50 or better chance he re-signs here.
And as many of us have mentioned, Timmy may not be the guy you want pitching for you in his 30s.
It's odd that this is the largest deal ever given to a player with less than two years of ML experience, yet somehow I still view this as a win for the Giants.
Bravo to the front office for their work over the past few weeks.
... but I do think that it is a sign that Giants management realizes that they won't be able to throw down for a 5-7 year deal if that is what it takes to keep {Timmy}.
Exactly this. {Edit: whoops. I think I misread the above. I read it as "Giants management realizes that they don't have to throw down for a 5-7 year deal", which is what I think. They now have the freedom to sign Timmy without him (or his agent) bending them over a barrel - they can just walk away if they can't come to a deal.}
And I think that Timmy is going to want the biggest and longest deal that he can get, and will follow it wherever it takes him. I don't imagine him quibbling over a million a year if the contract length is the same, but if somebody offers him a 7 year contract, and the Giants won't go past 5 with a team option, Timmy is GONE. And I think that there is a team that will offer Timmy 6 or 7 years (unless of course he gets injured or just keeps declining every year).
Personally, I also think that if just about any team offers him $25M/yr for 5 years and the Giants won't budge past $22M per year, then he is gone. Others don't think Timmy will go for the money, I do.
And finally, if the Giants can't come to an agreement with Timmy on a new contract before the start of next season, I believe that they should try and trade him for a boatload of quality prospects. With 2 of their best 3 pitchers signed for the next 6+ years, they not only can but should take a one year hit if it nets them several promising, young hitters with years of team control.
It's odd that this is the largest deal ever given to a player with less than two years of ML experience, yet somehow I still view this as a win for the Giants.

Don't no where this has anything to do with timmy. Madbum was under team control until 2017.
A significant portion of the "post Zito" money has now been spent. I'd *guess* that MadBum doesn't earn more than $1M this year (he was due a little over 500K) unless it's bonus money. And that next year (Zito's last) probably isn't much more than $1M (unless the "oops, I'm a super-2" $5M bonus kicks in). I'd assume that the big bucks in the guaranteed portion of that $35M are the final 3 years, after Zito is gone. Add in Cain's "extra" $5M/yr (what he's earning over the $15M of this year's salary) and that probably accounts for almost all of Zito's annual salary.
Just talked to Bumgarner. He's thrilled. They started talking over the winter, then team had to focus on Cain.
(Baggs)More than one Giants pitcher has suggested to me they'd be happy if Melky were next on extension list. He's made that strong an impression.
