Are we sure about this? and actually, it was a slash, it just didn't connect. I'm pretty sure players have been penalized, and even fined, for the same attempted slash b4, but I could be mistaken.

you are correct

61.1 Slashing - Slashing is the act of a player swinging his stick at an opponent, whether contact is made or not. Non-aggressive stick contact to the pant or front of the shin pads, should not be penalized as slashing. Any forceful or powerful chop with the stick on an opponent***8217;s body, the opponent***8217;s stick, or on or near the opponent***8217;s hands that, in the judgment of the Referee, is not an attempt to play the puck, shall be penalized as slashing.

he Buffalo Sabres will be without Ryan Miller for an undetermined amount of time because of a concussion.

Sabres general manager Darcy Regier told the Buffalo News on Sunday night, that the netminder, who was run over by Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic in the first period of Saturday's loss, will not suit up on Monday against the Canadiens.

Miller out with a concussion; Lucic set for Shanahan meeting

i think we all agree that goalies should be fair game that far out of the crease. However, as of now the rules state otherwise so it's irrelevant to the present situation.

Lucic knew full well that he wasn't going to get to the puck and decided to take a run at miller. He probably also knew that miller wasn't going to be expecting hit like that knowing the current rules

But miller needs to shut the fuck up. if he would of stayed in the crease where he belongs, this wouldn't of happened.

So you acknowledge that Miller was allowed to play the puck that far out of the crease, and that the rules are there that allow a goalie to do so without getting hit intentionally, but you don't think he has a right to be pissed about it, and he should stay in the crease and allow the next guy to have a breakaway on him?

Makes sense.

1. A concussion diagnosis without consulting Dr. Recchi? Bitch please.

2. No suspension necessary. The Miller will never even consider fixing Lucic's hunchback after this, that's going to be punishment enough.

I think this is bullshit. Miller was out of the crease. That means he's fair game. After all the whining & crying Miller, Ruff & Regier have done Shanahan is going to have a face to face with Lucic. This is ridiculous.

no it doesn't. it should, but it doesn't.
as the rules are right now, you can't hit a goalie anywhere, for any reason.

Really? My bad then. I thought it was only in the trapezoid that a goalie wasn't fair game.

no prob. there seems to be a fair bit of confusion about it in the thread.

Official Rules - Rule 69: Interference on the Goalkeeper - NHL.com - Rules

61.2 Penalty - In all cases in which an attacking player initiates intentional or deliberate contact with a goalkeeper, whether or not the goalkeeper is inside or outside the goal crease, and whether or not a goal is scored, the attacking player will receive a penalty (minor or major, as the Referee deems appropriate).

Bummer. That's one rule that needs to be changed. I still don't think Lucic should be suspended at all.

69.1 Interference on the Goalkeeper - This rule is based on the premise that an attacking player's position, whether inside or outside the crease, should not, by itself, determine whether a goal should be allowed or disallowed. In other words, goals scored while attacking players are standing in the crease may, in appropriate circumstances be allowed. Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper's ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal; or (2) an attacking player initiates intentional or deliberate contact with a goalkeeper, inside or outside of his goal crease. Incidental contact with a goalkeeper will be permitted, and resulting goals allowed, when such contact is initiated outside of the goal crease, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact. The rule will be enforced exclusively in accordance with the on-ice judgment of the Referee(s), and not by means of video replay or review.

What pisses me off is that Lucic has a history of making these types of hot-headed, reckless plays, but he won't get the same kind of flak from the league over this hit that a player like Kaleta or Avery or Gillies would receive. Let's admit it, the wheel of justice may be more predictable but it is still just as biased toward perceived reputations. Any of the three players I mentioned above would get a 2-5 game suspension for this hit on any given goaltender. There is a fine line between a tough power forward and a tough agitator. Lucic has danced on that line his entire career, yet no one in the NHL player safety office will deem this play worth the same suspension that they would undoubtedly hand out to a guy like Kaleta. That doesn't sit right with me. It's one thing if you want to let someone off with a warning if they've played like an angel their whole career, but a guy like Lucic should have some repercussions for reckless play. Everything about this play screams recklessness:

1. He's hitting a goalie
2. He's hitting a player with his back half-turned (from playing the puck away)
3. He didn't attempt to let-up at all, in fact, he elevated his shoulder into the hit
4. The principal point of contact was knee-on-knee. That in itself is reckless
5. The follow-through to Miller's head, although not a clear-cut headshot, was reckless

Those things, combined with a disciplinary history and a resulting injury, you tell me whether this shouldn't be a suspension or whether it should be but won't be. I think the latter.

edit: not to sway off topic, but I am also a non-fan of the trapziod. Sure, keep it. But make it the only goalie safe zone for handling the puck, can play the puck ANYWHERE outside of there or the crease and he's a skater. Handle the puck with care.

I refer you back to page one.
I wish they would make this change.

LUCIC:

"He came out of his net. I was going full speed," he told NHL.com. "There's not much I can do. So that's basically it."

lol

ohhhh Milan... we all saw it. I think we all saw that you had time to make a course adjustment.. lol
I'm thinking you've changed directions on the ice in that much space before. Or at least did you had ample time to... at a minimum you know a few maneuvers... you could have started lazily listing to the left ..

really... NOBODY caught this?
you people disappoint me sometimes

After all the whining & crying Miller, Ruff & Regier have done

leopard-4.jpg

Can't change his spots

AngryLindy.jpg

Can't stop whining.

1) No matter what the rule should be, the rule is what it is. And Lucic was out of bounds. High hit after the puck was gone. If that was a D man, it would have been a penalty. With Lucic's record, probably a game or two. With everyone knob-jobbing Miller and Ruff, probably five.
2) I am a goalie. I have been known to initiate contact. I know some of my counterparts are pussies. You come out, you should be hit. Cleanly. That was not clean.
3) Miller took a chop. That deserves a punishment in itself. Plus the comments afterward deserve one more. But he's a "victim". Soooo...
4) Sabres really didn't respond? REALLY? LOL. Ruff needs to learn how to place that anger properly. But he's never been known to do that. He's been going on about Brett Hull for 11 years and never once mentioned his team not moving him all series.

I agree with you.
You know that they are not going to meet for tea and crumpets without any repercussions though.

I say 2 games, but Miller should get the same for the stick swing.Trying to prove Lucic's intent on the hit is pretty hard,(other than video clips),Millers' swing is blatantly obvious.

This would be the perfect opportunity to change the god damn rule,so there is no grey zone. You come out of the crease and you're fair game.
