I can definitely see how Miller's stick swing would have been missed by the official at full speed, because I'll admit that until I saw the replay, I didn't catch it either, thinking that the stick whipped around with his body momentum and he was probably watching Lucic moreso than Miller at that point under the expectation that someone was going to jump him. They've got a chance to address it now after the fact.

I'm not sure exactly how the NHL suspension rules work. Can they issue a suspension to Miller and have it come out as "timed served" since he was injured on the play and will miss at least a couple games anyhow, or would any suspension have to be added to the end of the injury time?

But the intent factor for Lucic is pretty obvious, given that he makes zero effort whatsoever to avoid the contact. He doesn't pull up, try to stop, swerve, or anything else.

I hope they make a rule change so everybody is happy when there are 3rd string goalies playing all over the league. It won't matter to me, Everybody will then have a goalie as shitty as our "Star of the week" goalie...

Lucic defends actions, wonders about concussion - BostonHerald.com
Lucic expressed some surprise that Miller had suffered a concussion, given the new rules in the NHL that require players who are exhibiting concussion symptoms to go to the quiet room for 10 to 15 minutes to get checked out. Miller finished the first period and played the entire second period before leaving the game after being looked at by Boston doctors.

***8220;I***8217;ve looked at the hit 100 times and they said that he got a concussion,***8221; said Lucic. ***8220;His shoulder hit my chest, so there was no hit to his head. His helmet came flying off but his head didn***8217;t hit the ice. And later in the period, someone lifted (Tyler Seguin***8217;s) stick and threw him into the net as well, so who knows what it was. It***8217;s obviously unfortunate that he got hurt on the play.

***8220;Was I surprised? Yeah. Because with the new protocol and the concussion stuff, I know the last three NHLPA meetings that I***8217;ve been a part of and their clarifying of concussions and head injuries, the main thing that they***8217;ve talked about is there***8217;s no such thing as getting your bell rung or seeing stars anymore. That***8217;s considered a concussion and if you***8217;re in that position, you have to do whatever you can do to take yourself out of play. Obviously, Ryan plays a big part in the NHLPA and I respect what he does there. That***8217;s pretty much it.***8221;

After hearing, NHL decides against suspension for Boston's Lucic - NHL.com - News

TORONTO -- After a thorough review of the play, including a formal disciplinary hearing Monday, Brendan Shanahan, NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations, has decided against any further discipline to Boston forward Milan Lucic for his hit on Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller in Saturday's game at TD Garden.

Shanahan held a hearing with Lucic via conference call because he had specific questions he wanted to ask before making a determination on potential supplemental discipline.

"I had the hearing because I did make an initial assessment of the play as I do with all plays, but I did have some questions for Milan and I wanted to hear directly from him," Shanahan told NHL.com. "They were regarding his intent; at what point did he know there was going to be a collision; and whether or not he felt he had the time to avoid the collision. I was satisfied with his answers."

Shanahan said the minor penalty for charging was the proper call in this case because it follows Rule 42.1, which reads "a goalkeeper is not fair game just because he is outside the goal crease area."

"The minor penalty called on the ice was the correct call," Shanahan said. "And, while it's unfortunate that Miller was hurt I saw nothing egregious about this hit that would elevate it to supplemental discipline."

Lucic was issued a minor penalty for charging when he skated into Miller with 6:48 remaining in the first period of Saturday's game. Both Lucic and Miller were going after a puck, and the collision occurred inside the faceoff circle. Miller stayed in for the remainder of the first period and played all of the second period before being replaced by Jhonas Enroth to start the third period. Miller allowed 3 goals on 10 shots in the second period.

According to the Sabres, Miller suffered a concussion and will not play Monday in Montreal.

Then they shouldn't wander.

game 7 of the stanley cup finals thomas wanders out and lapierre fucking smokes him so hard that he is out of the game and rask comes in to replace and lets in 5 goals and canucks win for that reason.

you would cry fucking murder for the rest of your days as a fan.....

its easy to say they shouldnt wander but until your #1 goalie is knocked out of the game and it affects your teams chances I dont think anyone can really judge what should be or shouldnt be fair game.

its like the QB you gotta protect the most valuable piece and its got nothign to do with pussifying the league.

But it does. These are contact sports, no one should be spared. Goalies are protected enough, given the scenario you stated, yes I would be pissed. But I still believe that should be the rule. And QB's are all pussies.

They have their safe zone. At least that is how it should be. You wander out, be ready to get "smoked". Dont want to take that chance? Well get ready to block a breakaway shot then.

you would liquify the talent at goal just to show they are not pussies. that is not good for the future of the game.

but that's not the rule as it stands now.
that has been very clearly stated in the thread.

maybe only Thomas.

fwiw, I agree with no suspension.
its a minor or a major as written in the rules. he was assessed a penalty.
he SHOULD have gotten an ass-whooping as well, but that's on Buffalo.

sure if its accidental. what lucic did was not. that is what needs to be protected. collisions occur but lucic was avoidable or at least it could have been limited. I dont care what he said he had options he choose to take him out. we wont get anywhere with our sides of thought however.

It wouldn't be liquifying anything. So long as they stay in the crease, no contact. That is how I would make it.
