The banana incident, that should not be excused because that is not a part of professional sports. Talking shit is.

I think of the banana incident because it wasn't something said that could be taken care of on the ice. If another player said something like that to Simmons, Kane, Byfuglien, whoever, there would be consequences.

As Jeff mentioned, this is hockey, not European football (soccer). These types of things are meant to be settled by the players.

Also, let's not act as if this is the first and only time something like this has been said. It's not right, but it's not a headsmash into the turnbuckle... so don't call the police.

good one JS.. only reason i say a fine should be applied to both is because it was caught on camera.. part of the game yes, but its not something that hockey should be advocating.. i'm sure they like that its there because the intensity of hockey is what draws fans in.. but, in today's society, with these players looked at as being role models, they need to be scolded when they do something that isn't right..

i dont think its awful and i do talking shit is part of the game.. but i also didnt (still dont) think leaving my room a mess when i was a kid was a big deal, but i still got punished for it

In the FHL, you got players throwing water up into the crowd, talking shit, fights almost breaking out between fans and players, bench clearing brawls. Its pretty awesome.

Honestly, that's my style of hockey too, man. I've said some pretty nasty things about people's sisters out there, and I've had some pretty nasty things said about my sister too. A few months ago, my left-winger started fighting my right-winger while one of their girlfriends started shouting at them from the crowd!

The professional athlete has changed though. Sports icons are like any other high profile figure now. When you're given that much money and influence, you have a responsibility to act up to a certain standard. If a bunch of working class guys want to hit the rink and talk trash with no-holds barred, I'll be the first guy to grab my stick and throw the net on top of the car, but NHL has to be bigger than the niche, rough-and-tumble game.

Because children make up too large a percentage of the fanbase. They may not be the paying customer, but no one idolizes professional athletes as much as children, and while I do not agree that there is a strong correlation between violence on television and dangerous adolescent behavior, any time a product becomes so widely viewed by the country, it gets put under the microscope. Not to be too cynical, but between the pressure from sponsors the desire to break into the mainstream, the NHL wants to become just like the NFL and NBA, because their lameness gets ratings because they're more marketable to casual family sports fans.

In the grand scheme of things, prejudicial trash talk is one of the lesser identifiable traits of hockey that is going to get phased out in the NHL's attempt to be less controversial and subsequently make more money.
