Avery doesn't seem upset with it, so I don't anticipate too harsh a penalty. For everyone here that's played, we know what kind of jawing happens on the ice and in the locker room. It's not great for the public to see, but this could lead to a suspension for almost every game if stuff like this is enforced.

To reiterate, I don't approve of the slur itself. It is wrong to say something like that. But this could become a tool for players to use to gain extra powerplay time. "Hey ref, he just called me a bad word. I know you heard it. Call it!"

That would be quite the parade to the penalty box if the refs started calling penalties on every bad word they heard uttered on the ice. It would probably increase scoring, though.

To be fair (report me, I don't care) Avery didn't go to anyone and say it happened, from what I read it can be heard clear as day and the media approached Avery about it.

upon further review, i did forget avery backed same sex marriage.. so i guess homosexuality was related to the topic.. in that case, i'll agree, it was wrong

still think the way i do about the word itself though.. so the above is still true for other situations

i suppose thats valid.. however.. i think the two are slightly different.. the term used tonight has been used as a 'making fun of you' type term for similarly as long as its been used as a (not racial, but i cant think of the word) term (as far as i know, i'm pretty young though).. society has changed the meaning of that term IMO.. i know i use it more than i should, but i have no disrespect towards homosexuals.. as far as i'm concerned you can love whoever you want, just dont force your beliefs on me, and dont be an attention whore (i dont like straight attention whores either)..

you could argue that its kind of sad that the term has developed that way, but i do think they are different.. especially when used in a situation that doesn't involve homosexuals at all..

I understand its more a of cultural issue i just don't like letting people off with that as an excuse. I'm sure simmonds is a decent enough guy, but I'd just think he would have some perspective on the situation and say something different, if he said that.

The whole reason that racial and homophobic slurs are bad isn't because they are a descriptor of a race or sexual preference. If that were the case, then describing somebody as gay or black would be just as bad as the slurs. The reason that they are bad is because people use them as insults. When somebody uses an insult as a descriptor, they create a connotation between that insult and everyone it is describing. It's surprising how toxic that can be both to them and society around them. And yeah, sticks and stones apply when somebody is calling you a terrible player or insulting your mother, but not for hate speech.

And I think Simmonds (and every player who uses any kind of slurs) should get sensitivity training. You can't make excuses because he's black - a homophobic black guy is just as much a prick as a racist gay guy. You just can't say stuff like that on TV while you represent a sports team. You have to be role models, and stuff like that sets the league back.

i'm not condoning the actions, cause they shouldn't be said (especially by people who are supposed to be role models), but the outrage over words is just ridiculous.. with all the killing thats going on in the world and all the anger.. people are getting so worked up over a couple words being flung back and forth? no wonder this world is so fucked up

Exactly! I think a lot of people are missing the point here. Who gives a fuck about Avery? As far as we know he's not gay so I doubt he's overly hurt by that comment. It's people who actually are gay and see/hear this word being thrown around as a means of insulting someone who isn't gay by implying that they are, who are going to be offended by this.

Its a commomly used slur, i have gay friends at work and in the the city they call each other homo and fag so what's the big fuss. i'm ok with punishing them (fines) because it got caught on camera.. it is a bad example when stuff like that gets caught.. but it should be in the game.. one of the things that makes hockey so entertaining is how angry the players get with eachother..
