I am not sure how good DeQuan Menzie is though.

I'm not sure what the Lions plans are for Kenzie. I don't think he will fit in as a CB with the Lions, as he is much slower than any of the CBs they already have (he ran a 4.74 at the combine, 4.66 at his pro day).

What Kenzie does have is versatility as he can play the safety position, so maybe the Lions picked him up to add depth in that area of the secondary?

I agree with Mike D (gasp!) that he's too slow to be a CB in our system. I think he'll be looked at as a safety through the summer, and he's likely a pretty long-shot to make the roster.

His versatility is key for him- if he can show that he can play safety, nickel or dime as well as contribute on special teams he's got a great shot to at least make the practice squad to be used as an in-season injury replacement.

Imo he's just a depth signing to bolster the secondary through camp, but there's nothing wrong with that...

I think Mayhew just wants depth for training camp. If something better comes along he will get cut.

I doubt he is in anyones plans but guys like him have a way of finding their way onto special teams. So no big gamble either way.

I have no problem with him trying for a safety spot, from what I have read he is best at run support, and Lions could always use sure tacklers.

I think because Spievay is a question mark that they want to look at guys for depth at safety. Carey is the backup for sure at one spot, he earned it last year filling in admirably. Spievay we would expect to be the other with Silva and Wendling as mostly special teams contributors. We did pick up some other players as well, but if any of them stick it will be at the expense of one of these regulars

I don't think Silva and Wendling will both be just special teams contributors. If Silva makes the 53 man roster it'll be at the expense of Spievey as the 4th safety. Wendling already has a lock on the "5th" safety spot, but he's only here for his ST play. We won't keep a 6th safety, that's just too many at the position. Most teams only run with four.

I agree that Carey will be the primary back-up to Delmas and Quin, the real battle will be for the 4th spot between Spievey, Silva, Tyrell Johnson and Martavious Neloms...

This is like Speivey all over again...without the wasted draft pick.
