Indians Reportedly Offered Francisco Lindor $100 Million Contract Before Season

Francisco Lindor has had a meteoric rise in Major League Baseball, so great that the small-market Cleveland Indians reportedly tried to lock up their All-Star shortstop for nearly $100 million.

Per Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci (via Fox Sports), the Indians reportedly made an offer of "around $100 million" to Lindor before the season that he didn't accept.

In an amusing moment during spring training, the six-year-old son of Indians general manager Mike Chernoff said on a radio broadcast the team was trying to re-sign Lindor, per the Associated Press (via ESPN.com).

How many years?

If for 5 years that is $20 mil per, but if it was for 10 years it is only $10 mil per. A top line SS should be getting close to if not more than $20 mil per with the way salaries are today.

His agent, David Meter, said that they'll look at his contract status on a year-to-year basis and that it's not "very productive to draw a line in the sand." According to Baseball Reference, Lindor will make $579,300 in 2017 and is arbitration eligible in 2019. He's under team control until 2021 and is slated to become a free agent in 2022 if he doesn't sign an extension from now until then.

Doubt he wants out, Cleveland just went to the World Series last year, and from everything I have heard Francona is a players coach. I think this one comes down to Cleveland being their cheap selfs and tried to lock Lindor up for a long period at team friendly terms.

So Cleveland has control of Lindor for 5 more years and they offered him $100mil. The contract they offered I can almost guarantee was at least 10 years. Which would be nice for Lindor for the next 5 years, but the last five years would be very team friendly.

I wouldn't be surprised if that $100M was over a 6-8 year stretch (where they buy out his remaining arbitration years then add a few years onto that).

Given that he'll be a free agent around age 27, it wouldn't be a stretch to see him get a Heyward type contract if he keeps performing and stays healthy (8 years, $180ish million), although it's always a gamble either way.

As long as he remains healthy as you mentioned I think he will get a hell of a lot of money, especially considering Harper will get a $400 million dollar contract

this is from march:suds:

Brody Chernof, the son of Indians' general manager Mike Chernof, told Tom Hamilton during Sunday's broadcast that his father is trying to lock up Francisco Lindor for seven years.
Chernof was a guest in the booth and was asked by the veteran announcer if the elder Chernof was working on any deals at the moment. The Indians just finalized a contract extension with Jose Ramirez, and locking up Lindor would certainly be high on their list of priorities

andrus got 8/120 back in 2015:suds:

His agent isn't stupid. He'll take less in 2017 and he'll get $20M when he goes to Arbitration in 2018 and he'll get more in 2019, more in 2020, more in 2021 and more in 2022. I'd guess he'll get about $130M by just going to arbitration. Indians won't be able to get him for less than $250M for 10 years. By 2022 he can go out as a free agent and get $300M for 6 years, because a $50M a year contract won't be that odd.

and the story is:suds:

SI.com's Tom Verducci reports that Francisco Lindor turned down a contract extension offer worth around $100 million prior to Opening Day.

Brody Chernof, the son of Indians' general manager Mike Chernof, let the cat out of the bag in a radio interview toward the end of spring training that the club was trying to sign Lindor to a seven-year extension, but this is the first dollar amount we've seen attached to it. $100 million would be an unprecedented commitment for a guy who's not even arbitration-eligible until after 2018, but it would allow the Indians to buy out a couple free agent years for one of the best players in the game. Lindor and his camp didn't take the bait, however, and Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer says there are currently no active extension talks between the Indians and any player, Lindor included. Perhaps the two sides will try again next winter.

btw nobody makes 20 mil in arbitration the most is arrieta at 16 mil but hes in his last year:suds:

David Price got $20M in his last year with the Tigers.

The best case scenario for Lindor is to get $15-20M yearly for the next 3 years in arbitration, then score a Heyward type deal (8 years, $180M+).

Right though, but this year he makes 570k, next year he will get a bump, Kris Bryant got to 1.1. Thats two years at 1.6 range he is taking now, risking injury. He will get paid with arbitration, but will the total be 100 million or less?

He isn't even arbitration eligible until 2019, so he's already under team control for another five years. Why in the hell would they over him $100MM for what they already have for significantly less?

I think this one comes down to Cleveland being their cheap selfs and tried to lock Lindor up for a long period at team friendly terms.

Last time I did the math, Cleveland spent well more on player payroll as a percentage of revenue than the Yankees did.

The "they're too cheap," statement is a ridiculous one. "They're too poor" is fine.

Hahaha. No.

Probably seven years. I'd be shocked if it was over eight.

Usually, these offers try to keep the team controlled years affordable and then offer him slightly less than "market value." That said, I think you're selling him short at $20MM market value. Probably closer to $30MM.
