His wife works on the west coast, and many in the organization had a feeling this announcement would be coming from Stuart. ne of those California teams will be grateful to have his name added to their roster.

There was also custody issues with his step-daughter, which is the main reason he wasn't going to re-sign with the Wings and try to sign with a west coast team so he could be closer to his family.

Can't blame him one bit, it's gotta be hard being away from the wife and kids that much.

retiring or just not resigning him?

resigning him. it's well known that stuart wants to move back closer to the west coast to be closer to his kids. the reason they can't move to detroit is because of a custody battle that prevents the kids from leaving california.

This is a sad day. I've been hoping my son, Nicklas, would be able to see Nicklas play at least once in his life. I don't even feel like talking today.

Someone on twitter said this: the Wings best two defensemen are currently Ian White and Kronwall. Soooo...yeah, Holland has some work to do. I understand the Parise idea, but I'm pretty certain his priorities may be elsewhere come July 1st.

I would take Paul Martin in a trade if you throw in Jordan Staal...In exchange, Jay Bouwmeester (much better defenseman than Martin) and I'll throw in Matt Stajan.

We each get a bad contract off our hands, and you guys free up money that would have gone to Staal to extend #87 and #71.

Yeaaahhh...nope. Haha, although Shero has apparently said he'd only trade him if it's a hockey trade. So, no salary dumps, and certainly no JBouw.

Captain Obvious:

I guess Nashville could really put a crimp in Detroit's plans by signing Suter to a long-term deal?

I could see it happening. I don't think Poile is dumb enough to let him walk away, knowing how offensively challenged they are up front.

This is where Poile has to go to the Nashville owners and say, "All right, we've been frugal long enough, if we want to dance, we have to pay the band"
