I'm kind of nervous too, because I do think he's going to call it quits. I've been spoiled rotten by the dude.

dash isn't Ericcson an UFA?

Besides with Rafalski retiring if Lidstrom does the same the Wings would have something close to 14 million in cap space.

Say hello to Erhoff & somebody else.

He might be, I didn't check...Just threw that out there for giggles...

Here's hoping he jumps into the the DeLorean and dives 88 MPH straight to Ottawa and signs as 31 year old with the Sens.

Honestly though I have a feeling he's gonna hang 'em up. He'll be missed.

I don't think he will retire this year. He has been working out for a couple of weeks* and you don't do that at this time of the year if you are planning to quit.

Because he's taking time and announcing it makes me think it's a retirement. Most don't announce it in a big way if they're staying.

The only thing that makes me feel like he isnt retiring is how it isnt either Monday or Tuesday. If it was already set to one day I would say he is gone, no doubt.

My gut isn't telling me anything. Lidstrom knows he can still play at a very high level. It just depends if he wants to put in the training time.

It's the same with Selanne. It's all about willingness to put in the time off the ice to be ready to play.

My gut is that he will announce his retirement but then halfway through the season he will express interest in coming back and then rejoin the Wings late in the season.

Nick Niedermayer has a nice ring to it (kinda like Nino Neiderreiter)

I would like to think that a player of Lidstrom caliber and professionalism would announce it before the season starts so fans around the league can say their good byes to a true class act as the season wears on.

I don't know, Tox, I kind of get the feeling that Lidstrom doesn't really want a lot of fanfare. He's always been a very private, quiet guy, and public accolades aren't always his kind of thing.

I think he hangs 'em up also.

The guy is 41 years old and definitely has nothing left to prove and nothing left to win. And I'm sure the fact that he had his first - year of his career last year is weighing on him a bit.

He's had a fantastic career, and I think he's gonna enjoy the idea of a nice retirement back in Sweden.

Edit: I think the Wings take him back out of respect, but - and I mean no dis-respect here - I would be surprised if they really want him back given the cap space he opens up if he retires. And Holland doesn't strike me as the type who wants the uncertainty of multiple 1 year deals.

Lidstrom coming back for 20th season
Ted Kulfan/ The Detroit News
Detroit— Nicklas Lidstrom is returning to play for a 20th season.

The Red Wings have scheduled an 11 a.m. teleconference to announce the news with Lidstrom and general manager Ken Holland.

Lidstrom, 41, has been grappling with the decision of returning since the Red Wings season ended in May, after losing in the second round of the playoffs against San Jose.

Lidstrom is a finalist Wednesday at the NHL Awards Show for the Norris Trophy (best defenseman), Lady Byng (sportsmanship) and Mark Messier Leadership Award.
