What the F in there did I state as a fact? Wasn't it clear enough in my presentation this was my opinion. Not even sure what was in my post that would be misconstrued as a fact anywhere in there.

Maybe when I said he does things his own way instead of hiring professionals like other NFL franchises (GM's scouts, etc). Not sure how you can even disagree with that.

If you are debating my opinion on his desire to win, then you are wrong yet again, as this is a F'n opinion, never to be misconstrued with fact.

Why don't you respond appropriately, instead of just trying to stir my pot and get me to argue?

When did I say you were stating (or making up) "facts"? I don't even think I used that word anywhere in this thread, let alone the post you're quoting.

That said, yes, even opinions should be backed by substantive evidence.

You cannot back any of the following statements with any kind of even somewhat compelling evidence:

-Mike Brown wants to win
-he wants to get out from his daddy's shadow...
-he just doesn't have the knowledge to get out of that shadow with the way he has run things prior to the last couple seasons..

What a bunch of hogwash.

69-77-1 and on the hook for three more seasons.

Nobody rewards mediocrity like the Brown family.

Cue all the folks chirping about how we are blessed to have Lewis because of where we were before him.

Has any coach in any majo sport lasted this long in one city without a single playoff win?

I know Marvin bought himself a breather with last yrs suprise season, but if the team backslides against a brutal schedule this can get ugly

Rey is correct....it is impossible to lose money in the NFL. When you couple revenue sharing and the fact that the NFL is by far and away the most marketable and sought after commodity in the USA it's a 'win-win' for those lucky enough to own a franchise. The fact of the matter is that Brown is a horrible businessman who would've been an abject failure in a real 'business' setting. For those of you that think he would be succesful in the private sector please name a true businessman that:

A. Consistently puts out a terrible product
B. Blatantly disregards feedback from the customer
C. Blatantly disregards industry best practices and sticks to a failed model

Only in the NFL could a 'businessman' like Mike Brown be succesful.

Thank you. My point exactly. It turns my stomach anytime I hear someone say that Mike Brown is a 'bad owner but good businessman.'

Rather have Lewis than some loser like Dave Shula. Cry all you want about Lewis but our team was a joke before he arrived.

They've been a joke for most of the time that Lewis has been there..... Yes, the talent has been better than the Shula era. Much better. But the Bengals have been much better known for the thugs that Lewis coaches than any real success of the field. Zero playoff victories in 10 years -- That's not getting it done.

He couldn't HELP but make money. It would be impossible to lose it. As an owner of one of the 32 franchises, he is entitled to his portion of the television contract. This more than pays for all operational expenses. He did nothing to get the television contract (or at least not anything more than any other owner). It doesn't take a genius to inherit a can't miss business that simply can't fail.

In rebuttal I must point out Art Modell. He left Cleveland, pocketed $50mil in cash from the city of Baltimore, and within five years had to divulge himself of controlling interest in the Ravens, citing of all things cashflow problems. Now that is a shitty businessman, but it shows you can fail, even in the NFL.
Please don't misconstrue this as blind support of MB though.....

That had nothing to do with anything happening in Baltimore -- The truth was that Modell was so far in debt due to questionable stadium deals (he controlled the old stadium in cleveland) and other business ventures. His financial situation was so dire that he had to relocate and get a big payday just to stay afloat.... He had a sweetheart deal in Baltimore and still couldn't recover.

I suppose you could say that one thing Mike Brown HAS been good at is to not spend anything beyond what he was making with the Bengals. He never tried to take over the old stadium and hold the reds hostage, never invested in questionable businesses or real estate, etc, etc..... Modell had a much more questionable history in the business world - One that ultimately caught up to him.

Oh, I wasn't trying to say Brown was good at anything, just that poor as his business acumen may be, Modell's was worse. Brown clearly not only accepts but welcomes mediocrity, even though he forces his mouthpiece (Lewis) to publicly claim differently.

0 playoff wins. Losing record. Yeah, he deserves an extension.

This season is gonna be ugly. I cannot fucking wait to witness it. I'd be shocked if we won 4 games.

Nah, we'll win six or seven. The early part of the schedule isn't very difficult. I wouldn't be surprised to see them start out 5-2 then go 1-8 the rest of the way.

we always win a few we shouldn't and lose a few we shouldn't, so we'll see.

Exactly right. I thought I had written a post about Modell's situation earlier, but I can't find it, nor do I have the greatest recollection of it. But however well memory serves me, his issues arose from his stadium deals (especially pertaining to luxury suites which are excluded from revenue sharing) plus prior debt. Cleveland wouldn't give him what he wanted, but Baltimore would.

However it went down, his situation was unique and nothing like what we see in the NFL now.

Its 2 more years...Do you think if he tanks this season Brown will keep him??? If Brown can give Coles 10.5 for 1 season then he can pay ML for 2 years of service and send him on his way....Zimmer and Gruden are in waiting and so is Hugh Jackson...Top 5 O and 8-8 in only season as coach...If I have a choice I want Zimmer's attitude all over the team...but any of the 3 I think would work well.. Let's see what happens......

WE HAVE TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS THIS YEAR or its a failure in 2012!

Bullshit. I do not have to have any evidence of fact to support my personal opinion. Congrats on trying to make an argument out of nothing though.

Why would Mike Brown want to lose, when he makes more money if the stadium is packed with people buying concessions, tickets, memorabilia and if he is constantly selling out and there is a waiting list for season tickets, you now can riase prices.

There is zero reason to stay a mediocre/poor team. As you guys stated, it is impossible to lose money in the NFL now, but doing bare minimum does not net nearly as much revenue as doing really well does, especially with next year being the cutoff requring teams to spend 99% of their cap space, which Brown signed off on during the CBA. If Mike Brown is a cheap skate and wants to hoard as much money as possible, he would be better off winning the SB every year rather than getting the #1 draft pick.

So go :hdn:

Whether Mike Brown is 'cheap' or not is besides the point. The point is that he is a lousy businessman. As you point out, wouldn't a good businessman want to win games to potentially increase revenue? Hasn't Mike Brown been running a team for over two decades without a single playoff victory? Seems like a bum to me.

He's a shitty businessman. He is, however, an excellent free rider. He basically exploits the weaknesses in a system and the work of others to maximize his profits. Basically, he profits on the organiztions that do things the right way (i.e. the rooneys, Robert Kraft...most nfl franchises) that have made the NFL so marketable. If everyone ran thier organization the way that Brown has the NFL would probably be behind both MLB and the NBA in terms of popularity bc the product would be so poor. Instead, it's a monster. It's the most popular thing in America. People crave it. We sit here and talk about it on a message board year round.
