Finebaum isn't making that claim, Cecil Hurt is

Cecil Hurt is a pretty good sports writer..... Yeah, he's based out of Tuscaloosa, but he's a pretty savvy guy. VT is a no-brainer.... But NC lite??? I'll bet there are some other offers out besides just that one.

SEC Pods:

West:

Arkansas
LSU
Missouri
Texas A&M

Central:

Alabama
Auburn
Ole Miss
Mississippi State

Southeast:

Florida
Georgia
South Carolina
North Carolina State

North:

Tennessee
Vanderbilt
Virginia Tech

Permanent non-pod rivalries

Alabama - Tennessee
Auburn - Georgia
LSU - Ole Miss
Virginia Tech - NC State
Missouri - Kentucky
Vanderbilt - Mississippi State

The pods keep rivalries intact to a degree, some rivalries won't be annual like Ole Miss-Vandy, Tennessee - Georgia, Tennessee - Florida, Auburn - LSU, Alabama - LSU, Arkansas - Ole Miss

Since this is all about $$$ and expanding TV markets, I bet it will go down like this:

SEC needs new states, so out goes FSU, Clemson, Louisville, etc.

North Carolina and Virginia seem to be obvious choices. That would be UNC, NC State, Duke, VT, and UVA. I imagine the two would come from this pool....or we sit at 14.

you're right ... but i don't think that duke is even an option (small private school, no football following, bad cultural fit). UNC and UVA are bad fits culturally too but I imagine the SEC would take UNC in a heartbeat .. If I had to guess the SEC's pecking order, it would look like this:

UNC
VT -- best fit culturally
UVA (if no VT, for the DC market)
NC State (if no UNC, for the Raleigh market, and a decent fit)

I think that Clemson is a great fit but don't think it'll happen.

Clemson will get blocked by SC, UF, UGA, aTm, UK, and any other schools that don't want their in-state rivals to be brought in. This means no Ga. Tech, FSU, Clemson, Louisville, etc.....

I think unc would leave the acc if they felt they had to, but not without duke. So the question is which conference is going to take them both or do they stay put together in the dwindling acc?

Even if va tech, fsu, and clemson find other homes a leftover acc wouldnt be so bad especially if they can convince ND to swallow the affiliation whole.

unc ..............pitt
ga tech ..............miami
nc state ..............syracuse
uva ..............boston college
wf ..............notre dame
duke ..............uconn
usf ..............louisville or cincy

How much does Okie-Lite like being in the Big12? Are they locked to the hip with OU?

I've already stated that it would be in the B12's best interest to get teams that have yearly ooc games w/the SEC.

Clemson
Florida St

If VT were to join the SEC, WVU would have their yearly SEC ooc as well....that would leave the southeasternmost team in the B12 to set a yearly ooc game with an SEC opponent.............................................to get it to a nice round number of 4.

Volbound, why do you think the SEC would take State over Carolina?

Also, if conference commissioners thought VT would bring the DC and Virginia market wouldnt they already be in the B1G?
