Howell, Abrams, Gore and Wood is a fucking nice haul for Nats though.

Both teams got what they wanted. Padres better capitalize. Still not the best team in even their own divison.

Apparently He's got the Nats on his no trade list, so he's about to get paid to waive that to get the deal through.

Be pretty funny if he didn't though
Yeah I just heard that. haha yeah good luck with that distraction SD.

hold the presses

Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports that Eric Hosmer will have to waive his no-trade clause to be included in the Padres' trade with the Nationals for Juan Soto and Josh Bell.

Hosmer's inclusion in one of the biggest trades in baseball history is purely for financial reasons as the Padres attempt to stay under the luxury tax threshold. The veteran first baseman will need to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate the trade. It's unclear whether his unwillingness to do so would prevent a finalized trade from happening at this stage. Stay tuned.

This is EXACTLY why you include no-trade-clauses to your contract. Well done, Eric. Now go get yourself PAY-ED!

It was reported yesterday that Hosmer was told he won't be traded. Now if he wants to be traded it could still happen, but with Bell in the deal I think he's done in SD, maybe just not yet. He's been a huge disappointment.

So say he doesn’t waive it, would that block the entire deal or he just stays in SD?

I would think he would stay. I doubt the Nats are too eager to get an overpaid, underachieving first baseman. They made a really good haul.

Yeah they did but Soto and Bell in that lineup is nasty.

Gore isn’t the prospect he once was but he was also like the best pitching prospect. Getting 4 out of their top 5 is definitely a great haul

I was just thinking if Hosmer is the reason this deal doesn’t go through he better watch his back

Gore has shown some flashes of being elite, but has had some injury issues. Huge upside though. The other young prospects are talented, but unproven. That's always a gamble. Win win for both teams I think. The longer that Nats waited the less they would've gotten.

This some bullshit.

As a VT fan, I always said I would gladly trade a decade of really good teams for one chip and nine years of incompetence. As a Nationals fan, boy was I fucking wrong.

Save us Eric Hosmer. You're our only hope!

A terrible contract

it was terrible when it was first signed. he was coming off a really good 2017 season, but it was also on a .351 BABIP. he's never really drawn a lot of walks and had a career .342 OBP at the time, and he's never had an ISO higher than .179 (unless you count the 38 games in 2020). he hit too many ground balls and he's never really fixed that. he was a glorified Casey Kotchman.

Hosmer wouldn't waive his NTC, so they re-worked it apparently
