This is an article in the Dan Diego Tribune written by Nick Canepa.

Cheaters never prosper. It’s a lie. They can. And they do.

So today we must wonder: Did the New England Patriots cheat the Chargers out of a ring, maybe two -- or at least a chance at becoming Super Bowl champions?

And, with that, did they cheat them out of a new stadium?

Maybe, maybe not. We’ll never know for sure; we’ll never know if the Chargers were good enough. But one maybe is one too many.

It’s out there. And it’s not a good out there. New England’s laundry has been dirty and it’s getting filthier while they take everyone else to the cleaners.

An excellent, well-researched report that erupted Tuesday morning on ESPN.com claims that, from 2000 to 2007, the Patriots, under coach Bill Belichick, videotaped the signals of opposing coaches in 40 games and practices and walkthroughs, Commissioner Roger Goodell had a Nixonesque moment and had eight tapes destroyed and notes shredded by his NFL goons, Patriots employees snuck into visiting locker rooms and copied play sheets, and his poor handling of “Spygate” forced Goodell to turn le affaire “Deflategate” into his “make up call” to appease outraged owners.

Anything for an edge? The Patriots went over it.

On Jan. 14, 2007, the Chargers hosted the Pats in an AFC Divisional Playoff Game. San Diego was 14-2 and the No. 1 seed, winner of 10 straight. New England won 24-21. Did the Chargers screw it up? Sure. They were better than those guys and it got Marty Schottenheimer fired.

The Chargers dropped like 12 passes that day and Eric Parker fumbled a punt return at the goal line. They screwed up a ton on their own.

It was ironic that was the game that Marty wasn't being Marty and it still got him fired.

I can't believe this crap. Before the day is over, it won't be an accusation, it'll be a fact that the Patriots somehow cheated the Chargers out of a Super Bowl appearance and a ring. The fact that this game was played in San Diego has nothing to do with anything, the Patriots must have somehow cheated. Did this writer bother to check the most recent poll of San Diego residents. They don't want to pay for 75,000 people to go to a football game 10 times a year. They'd rather have something else that is available to a million taxpayers.

These "gates" are more about media coverage than Belichick, Goodell or the NFL. These "scandals" showcase the ineptitude of coverage, reporting, and editorializing of modern sports writing. At the center of this era is the media giant ESPN. Some strange acts of "journalism" have come out of this company that is never rehashed as it is regurgitated throughout the modern channels of blogs, tweets, bites, promos, and reprints.

This particular story has been reprinted in all major outlets without a hint of journalistic criticism ... yet the story is without a trace of any credibility with what little new content it contains ... yet there it is, untouched and uncontested

Strange things are going on over at ESPN. A good idea of the workings behind the scenes can be understood here:
No One Knows What ESPN Is Doing To Grantland

Whether you're a fan of Simmons as of writer or not, he is/was respected as the founding and chief editor and boss at Grantland, a source (to me) of great wit and perspective on sports and its culture. Besides all that though, the story illustrates a management akin to that of the ineptitude of the NFL

... with both companies raking in money from us fans, it's odd not to wonder that maybe the "ineptitude" these two demonstrate isn't a regard to the integrity of their craft as much as it is a motive to make money ...

I just don't understand how a competitor in the free market, like the San Diego Tribune, can applaud such scum ...

The Pats are jamming your communications!!!!!!! Hard to believe this story got legs after the opener. ESPN is a shitty mouthpiece for the NFL; nothing more. I don't watch ESPN unless they have "the game" on there. Everyone should follow suit and realize how irrelevant their programming is.
