lmao Packers are such a whiny fanbase and Rodgers is the biggest douche QB in the league imo. Always crying or whining about something. That was clearly not a facemask. The defender TOUCHED the mask but never grabbed it. Rodgers is a known flopper so no surprise this happened.

Facemask rule, as written, wasn’t violated by Lions

Article 5 No player shall twist, turn, or pull the facemask of an opponent in any direction. Penalty: For twisting, turning, or pulling the mask: Loss of 15 yards. A personal foul. The player may be disqualified if the action is judged by the official(s) to be of a flagrant nature. A.R. 12.12 Third-and-10 on A30. Runner A1 runs to the A33, where he is tackled by B1, who incidentally grasps A1’s facemask on the tackle, but it is not a twist, turn, or pull. Ruling: A’s ball, fourth-and-seven, on A33. No Foul.

Was an amazing throw and catch though. Not many QBs can huck it like that from their own 30.

When it happened in real time, I thought there was no doubt about it...Rodgers' head jerked to the side, and he ended up wearing his chinstrap like a fake moustache. But like Redseat said, when you slowed it down, you saw that that wasn't what happened at all.

Sucks for Detroit, but you can't review those, and quarterback player safety is of utmost importance to the league

No, but in the ref's defense it definitely would have looked like the right call from his perspective.

This is correct. In slow motion it was a terrible call, but watching it live it looked like a facemask

Oh Tom is a giant cry baby too, don't get me wrong. I just think Rodgers is the biggest. Guy always whines and complains after EVERY hit/loss. Least Brady keeps it at like 25% of the time.

That means all he saw was the head go right a little right and then he reached for the flag.

Exactly...you can't blame the ref because he couldn't see the entire play from behind, but the fact that no other official stepped up to correct the call, fuels the need to review penalties on some level.

Most of the butt burn is coming from Patriot's fans. They just can't handle another quarterback making a nice play and getting some kudos, somehow that just knocks Brady's pedestal down a inch or two.
no one said the hail mary wasnt a nice play ... the face mask call shouldn't have been called therefore the hail mary should not have happened .. the lions got totally screwed ..

I'm with the consensus: real time looks like a penalty, replay looks like a bad call.

that wasn't a facemask ... it was a horsecollar ...

Horse collar rule was put in after Roy Williams ended the season of 2 different players by doing the exact same tackle. The rule clearly states that you must grab inside the collar of the jersey or the pads. Then you must also pull the ball carrier down backwards. And it must be in one jerking motion.

The rule wad intended to cover one extremely specific action, and it is the absolute mis applied penalty in football. But that tackle didn't qualify for even a single one of those conditions.

The players decided the outcome of the game.

That's how sports works.

Tough break, but even if they could review it, I doubt it would have changed. Most likely it would have been a "Stands as called" since, even in slow motion, it's still pretty tough to gauge if he hooked his finger around the bar on Rodger's face-mask.

Still, they have a chance to win the game, go make a play. The penalty hurt, but that one lone call is not why the Lions lost that game.

No doubt. A minor facemask should only be 5 yards....not 15
That's not exactly how it works. What would have been a 5 yard facemask penalty in the old days isn't a penalty at all anymore.

This was called a facemask because at live speed, everyone in the world thought he grabbed Rodgers' facemask and twisted his head around. I can't blame the ref for throwing the flag on that one.

As for correcting it, I'm still not crazy about allowing reviews for penalties, as most penalties are judgment calls. Sucks, but them's the breaks.
