The AEG unit is pursuing plans to build a professional football stadium next to the Staples Center in hopes that it would serve as the future home of an NFL team.

Heck, sounds like a smart financial decision to me...

Almost this. They can also own a team in a market that does not contain an NFL team. Which explains why Paul Allen can own both the Seahawks and the Trail Blazers.

I would assume it's gotta be positioning. The Staples Center is one of the busiest arenas in the country and the only one that hosts 3 teams from big 4 sports leagues, so it's definitely worth a lot of money.

Could also be opening up some quick cash by selling off the arena. Could make for a nice down-payment on an expensive football franchise (though Anschutz is one of the few guys out there who could afford to purchase an existing NFL franchise by himeself).
