It's the rarest of moments in the NFL but among it's most heartbreaking show of respect when you have every player from both teams sidelines come out to the cart to send the player off. And that is what we saw that night when Koy Detmer went into San Francisco on MNF in front of John Madden and Al Michaels and put forth one of the most legendary performances we have ever seen from a quarterback in any era of professional football.
Before McNabb even got injured that was already one of the toughest games on the 2002 Philadelphia Eagles. That was a consistent playoff team with Garcia and TO on Monday Night Football (the prime game of the week for NFL back then instead of SNF) in San Francisco. And Koy went in there and lit them up. With the game at 28-10 with just under 4 minutes to play he was driving them down the field again. Great deep pass to Pinkston that he couldn't pull in. Next play on 2nd and 10 he gets injured while completing a huge gain for the first down and then some getting the team down the the 5 yard line.
After early jitters in the game Koy Detmer keyed in and dominant. He was far better than AJ Feely ever was on the rest of that 2002 season that gave AJ all this undeserved glory that netted the Eagles a high 2nd round pick from the Dolphins afterward. If Koy never got injured he was going to ride the Eagles into the playoffs on an undefeated record and he would have been so good in doing so that they would have kept McNabb sat and Koy Detmer would have taken that team to the Super Bowl and won it in 2002. I have no fucking doubts about it in my mind. I knew it at the time and still to this day over 17 years since I know it as much if not more now.
Historically it is one of the most unfortunate sports what if scenarios we have been forced to only contemplate instead of actually been allowed by the sports gods to see.
