For those asking - Yes I have heard from very reliable, Russian ,source that Kovy to KHL is being finalized -- it is a Russian source though

i trust this guy personally...the russian thing is more important than anything though. god this is a circus.

I think Kovy is very loyal to Russia and there's nothing wrong with that...If this comes to fruition, it would be a big coup for the KHL.

jeez.. could we please get some finality to this crap.. 'he's basically signed in LA', 'he is signed in NJ', 'he might be signed in NJ', 'its close in NJ', 'LA is out', 'LA is in', 'he's going to the KHL'.. this is ridiculous.. and its dragging out my misery of losing the guy thats been my favorite for the past decade.. GRR screw you kovalchuk!

haha. it is not really kovalchuk though it is all the writers. at this point i think matthew barry from la is kind of just hoping he signs there. i really do not think he will.

true.. cant blame the guy for taking his time making the decision.. the writers are just going bonkers over him.. he has a phone call with a team and they say its close or that he's signed

If he doesnt sign with the evils, fine. That is one less good player they have. Unfortunatley, it is 8 million more they have to spend.

I don't like it. a premier goal-scorer in his prime leaving the NHL for 'greener pastures' in the KHL. Granted, he is Russian, so Ilya leaving the NHL to play in his own country makes sense... I just hope it's not a sign of things to come with other premier hockey players, native of Russia, or not.

i said before, from what i have read each russian team can only sign 1 player to a big contract. also, i doubt any non russia stars go over there. most players would probably take 2 mil less just to stay in the nhl.

I agree to an extent. Still, losing a guy of Ilya's caliber to another hockey league is a big blow to the NHL. There is little doubt about how talented Kovalchuk is, and how much of a key component he could play in any number of NHL lockerrooms.

I just wouldn't like seeing talent like that leave for another league.

Here is a list of recent NHL'ers now in the KHL: TheKHL.net ::: List of NHL Players who've signed in the KHL (Kontinental Hockey League)

filatov, zherdev, and zednik are the only ones that stand out to me. other than that they are either no names or washed up. i doubt the nhl will miss kovalchuk much. nobody cared about him on the thrashers. i do see what you are saying. i do not think the trend will continue.

i don't think it's a bad hit on the NHL at all...he's a big name, but one player doesn't make the league competitive. couple that with the fact that the money has been inconsistant at best, i don't see a ton of guys leaving. no matter what the KHL offers, the Stanley Cup is still the Stanley Cup. no greater competition in sport.

Didn't Hudler and Zherdev both go to the KHL and now their running back?

i mean, i really think it's the competition. players that good have to be competitive to get to where they are...if i were that good, i'm pretty sure i'd want to play for a championship that MATTERED. if i were part of the winning KHL team, i'd be happy, yes...but the whole time (especially if i were an NHL defect) all i'd think about would be the Cup.

At this point he could sign for the league minimum for the team "Whoever is playing the Flyers on that night" and I WOULDN'T CARE AS LONG AS HE SIGNS SOMEWHERE.

Freaking free agency is two months? I can't last two weeks of this will he/won't he. It's like a bad romantic comedy. First, Kovy and LA are hooking up, but then he accidentally uses the ashes of LA's grandmother as kitty litter, so LA gets mad and they break up. Then he and the Devils look like they might be cozying up, but it turns out New Jersey is a guy, so that doesn't work. Then LA calls to apologize and they try to work out their differences, but Kovy's ex, the KHL show up at the door, and now it's just a whirlwind of I DON'T FREAKING CARE.
