and the NHL offices stamped them with the commish signature. Sure, it'll be addressed, but these contracts will be grandfathered in, just like Jagr's was after the lockout.

Exactly.

And really, the FIRST contract exploiting this loophole should've been rejected by the front office.

Is this official?

Yeah, it's been approved and the Devils had a presser for Kovy today.

Elias, Parise, Brodeur, Langenbrunner and Leblond (LOL no idea why he was there) attended.

Zach flew from Minnesota to Jersey yesterday to attend.

In which case you can blame the people who wrote the CBA.

The devils are playing within the rules.

Any way you want to spin it this guy isnt worth even close to 10 mill per so he is being overpaid in a huge way. Which is what lead to the lockout. In the rules or out it is bad for the sport

Haha, that's pretty groovy. I knew it was official, just making a jest. How's it going, G-bone?

You say he isn't worth even close to 10 mill per year and I say he's a steal at a 6mill per cap hit. To each his own...

Solid d-bomb. Trying to start posting on here more with you guys, but then there's work, golfing, swimming, the lake, etc. haha

I'm already ready for October. Have about 7 devils away games I'm going to this year...

He is being paid over 10 as stated earlier in the thread BY YOU he will retire before ever seeing the 550K years. This is a spin free zone my friend.

If you dig deeper into this deal you'll realize that it's not 17 years at all. It's basically set up for him to "retire" after 12 years when he's made all of his coin. He can then go to Russia or do whatever he wants. Also, after the 7th year there's a one year window where there's no clause involved and he can be traded.

For what it's worth, if I were a GM, I would not have done this. I can't imagine signing a guy, even a young guy, to any deal longer than seven years. A guy like Kovalchuk, who is approaching 30, I would likely have signed for 5 years and $40 million at the max. I would definitely have started with an offer of 5 years for $35 million, though. If he didn't take it, I'd look at someone else.

I'm not spinning anything. You're whining all over the thread stating contracts like this could lead to a lockout. Guess what, then go complain to the guys who wrote the CBA about how they weren't intelligent enough to recognize things like this could come to fruition. Not my problem.

Oh, and Kovy's only making 6 million a year for the first two years of it, so when his salary shoots up you can come back and tell me he's overpaid:D

The bolded is merely speculation on my part. Neither of us know if he'll complete the whole contract or not. By the time those final 5 years roll around he'll have more money than he'll know what do with and it's entirely possible he will want to keep playing the game.

How am I whining, I am simply stating this is bad for the NHL. I don't see how this should be a good thing for anyone, considering the previous work stoppage.

Yes, if only they had put in a max percentage vs cap hit per player or something. Oh, wait....

Yup, completely within the rules.

The Devils are going to need some firepower considering Marty is almost out the door. It will be weird to see a game without #30 between the pipes.

Livin' the life! Glad to hear it. The Devs are looking pretty damn good at the moment. It will be interesting to see how the Atlantic plays out - and by interesting I mean shitstorm. You still need to make it out to a West Coast game. That way you can see the Devs and the undeniable, unforgettable, fine, fresh, fierce California Girls.

Really, the league should've stepped in and axed the Hossa signing if they wanted to set the standard. Hossa makes 7.9 per yr over the first 7 and a measly TOTAL of 3.5mill over the final 4 which is less than 900k per.

What you consider weird I consider sad. :(

The atlantic is going to be yet another battle this year, definitely.

I will definitely get out to the left coast in the next few years when the Devs go on their Cali tour. I'd love to..
