According to my equation, his ppg translates to an annual salary of $4.4346 million, assuming him as average in all other regards. However, Gagne is also a plus defender and has leadership qualities, which could feasibly add about $1 million more to his value, which falls nicely in line with his actual cap hit.

I dont know what equation you use, but 40 points for over 5mill seems WAY tom much money per point.

It's based on ppg, not total points. He had an injury. It condensed his season significantly. His scoring rate translates to about $4.5 million, and he's a plus defender and good leader. His contract is good.

Kovalchuk $102m over 17 years. $10m per year for the first 8 years. $7.5 for the next 2, from what I heard

uhhhhh...i guess i won't start on these deals and how WRONG they are. so, the cap hit is around, what 8?

I will disagree, I wouldnt want that contract on my team for the production.

If his annual cap hit is anything over 8 million per year I think they overpaid. Is the 17 years 150 million confirmed? I thought the 12 year Hossa one was long, but 17 years?

Cap hit exactly 6.0 at those numbers. Most of the money paid out in the first 10 years, when production presumably wouldn't fall off much, then an average of $1m per year the last 7 years of the contract, giving Kovy the freedom to retire whenever he wants. Yep, perfect use/abuse of the loophole.

Oh that wouldn't be too bad, still very long though. I guess these long deals are a way to beat the cap, if I was a player though I wouldn't want to commit to one team for the rest of my career.

Wow, if the 102 million over 17 years is true then NJ just made a HUGE signing. A 6 million cap hit for Kovy? He's not perfect, and I'll admit that, but he is worth alot more than a 6 million cap hit. Kudos if it's true. Now if Buffalo could actually do something exciting....

So how does it work contract wise if a player signs one of these contracts, retires at 37 when he's making 1 million a year, and then comes out of retirement in like 6 months? Can he sign a new contract or is he still under contract from the original contract he signed?

Hopefully he plays out the whole deal.

i'm pretty sure the contract is nullified...however i DO think that rights would still belong to the team.

Is there anything Bettman could do or is it too late, considering there are now three or four of these deals?

Thank god it's over. Everybody out east can get a headache crunching his numbers. I'm ready for a dozen more signings today. There shouldn't be too many guys that have to wait and see where others go before signing now.

Shit, they coulda just made it a 4 million cap hit with a 120 million / 30 year deal. 100 million paid out in the first 10 years and 1 mill per year for the next 20.

What a horrible signing ;)

I told you guys some GM was gonna throw $10M per at Kovalchuk. They just also exploited a loophole which allows his cap hit to be a lot less. It wouldn't surprise me if the NHL does away with these types of contracts when the CBA expires after this season.
