I think NJ looks good, but are hardly the favorites for the East. They had virtually the same team in the playoffs. They are now - Martin and + Volchenkov. They acquired Tallinder. And they have Hedberg, but Brodeur is one year older. Volchenkov is slightly better than Martin. Tallinder will help, but didn't they lead the league in goals against last year?
They had Kovy for the playoffs last year...most Devils fans argue he had a decent playoff...and they still lost in the first round...in five games.
