Hmmm...I wonder if a JayBo for Drew Doughty trade is feasible.

/I also wonder if I can grow wings and fly to the moon.

He turned down 9 years? At a pretty nice cap hit?

I wonder if Doughty is insisting on a NTC or NMC and the Kings are balking...Doughty probably doesn't want to get the Jeff Carter treatment.

/That's why Drew should come to Calgary, the Flames give out NTC's like candy.

If you let Drew know candy is involved, he might sign there, but a better incentive would be some doughnuts from Timmy's

Reports are the two sides haven't talked since June 23rd. Kings have reportedly offered a 9 year contract worth 6.5 million per year and Doughty turned it down.

For real?!? As a D-man, how much better does he think it's going to get?

I don't think it's the money part of the contact is the problem. Doughty probably doesn't want that long of a deal. In 5 years he can become an UFA. Players like the opportunity to test the market.

That is a big rumor

If Drew wants the big money Kings don't want a NMC/NTC so the story goes

I am not worried. If it gets to mid August then I will start to worry. :drama:

Imagine what he would have been offered this year.

yup. a 9 year deal locks him up at $6.5m in a rising cap world.
if it's front loaded, they would be tacking some pretty low years at the back, but in 9 years he will only be 30.

he is a franchise player... don't blame him for wanting to have the UFA card to play a few times along the way.

Did I read that right?

The ball appears to be in the Kings' court in talks with Drew Doughty - latimes.com

It's apparently up to the Kings to end the long lull in talks on a new contract for restricted free agent defenseman Drew Doughty.

Don Meehan said Tuesday he hadn't spoken to the Kings about Doughty since June 23. It's believed the Kings are offering up to nine years at more than $6.5 million per year.

"I think he'd be happy to stay if we agree upon terms that are acceptable to him," Meehan said. "And those are our instructions, to negotiate with L.A. on that basis to secure something that he'd be happy with."

Unless he's planning on playing on another continent, he's staying whether he would be happy to or not. He's a restricted free agent. He will sign a contract by December 1 or sit out the season.

Grrrrr.

"I know how important Drew Doughty is to the Los Angeles Kings on a going-forward basis," Meehan said. "I think that's something that they're very well aware of and they know what they have to do."

Am I supposed to read that as "the Kings know how important Doughty is to them," or "the Kings know that I know how important Doughty is to them"?

Doughty is an important part of the Kings, but if he sits the year out, I'm happy to let Viatcheslav Voynov, Nicolas Deslauriers, Jake Muzzin, Alec Martinez -- oh, and that Jack Johnson guy -- pick up the slack.

Send him to New Jersey for Zach Parise and Adam Larsson.

I've got to admit Meehan sounds very SMUG. Like you said the Kings have a number of good young defenseman on the way. So he better not take it too far.

Here are my key personal flash points:
1) He (Drew Doughty) said he felt sick when he saw DL speaking w Calgary thinking he might not be going to the Kings
2) Lifelong Kings fan
3) Works his tail off to get in shape before ever playing an nhl game.
4) Has an outstanding two years (and maybe thinks an 85% commitment will do based on his huge talent).

Going the other direction
5) Then shows up in relatively poor shape last year
6) Has for him a very average year
(also, I don’t care that an average year for him is an ok year for another player… if he were
‘another player’ then he’d be having out of body experiences)
7) Then in the playoffs, he did have one great game…. out of six that is. Also made some big mistakes and in Game 3 when you need your best player to sort of settle things down and take control when things are going against you, he clearly didn’t. Not that anyone else did either.

So you look at points 1 thru 4 Or you look at points 5 thru 7. Two different Doughty’s in my opinion. Also, say he gets a monster contract and shows up late and out of shape (again) and plays like he did last season….. the fans will be all over him imo.

I suppose point 8 would be, where does he get this idea (or his agent) that he should be paid as much as a Nick Lidstrom or Chris Pronger? He has neither won a cup or a Norris.

I guess that was my point. Look at recent Norris nominees and top guys in the league - Chara, Green, Keith, Lidstrom, Pronger, etc. Only one of those guys make more than $6.5 million per year. Forwards top out at about $9-10mil/year, but I'm not aware of any defenseman making more than $7mil/year, and few make over $6mil/year.

If he's thinking he might get more in 4-5 years, yeah, the cap probably goes up some. But even then, he MIGHT make $7-8mil/year range and that's only IF he continues to be a top D-man. To me, $6.5mil/year is an excellent salary now and moving forward and over $50 million in guaranteed money regardless of how his career works out is not a "let me think about it" situation, but a "sign it quick before they change their mind" situation.

It's primarily b/c of rabid fans like us who go to the games, watch on TV, and buy the jerseys. But yeah, it'd be nice if the system was a little more equitable. You get to be a hockey player, how about taking $200K a year to do that awesome job and letting a dude that mops floors make like $50K. Socialism would be the best, if it only worked.

if there is anyone that deserves to make the big millions in these sports its hockey players and football players (and rugby) the pain and damage these guys take is like no other (add lacrosse as well) the money itself is disgusting but as long as fans are paying to see it then they are worthy to collect it. I just wish I had an ounce of talent that these guys have.
