Two double A guys and two single A guys for a proven MLB player????

You gotta be kidding me, I'd make that trade all day, every day.

Proven or not, it's a reliever. We all know that the average shelf life for relievers isn't all that long, and it's the most unpredictable position. Do you not remember how quickly once dominant Boston relievers such as Foulke, Okajima, Bard fizzled out?

in Bard's defense he started to fizzle out when the Red Sox f'd with him and tried to make him a starter

Damn Kimbrel why... why... why...

Then again it wouldn't be a Red Sox v Yankees series without a heart attack

Not at all. We won't know if they "vastly overpaid" for many years. Stop assuming all prospects are a sure thing. You are probably one of those guys still holding his breath on Lars Anderson and Anthony Ranaudo. The Red Sox bullpen was absolutely awful last year. They had to do something like this to win at the Major League level. At the end of the day, winning games at Portland and building for the future gets old. Meanwhile, they still have Betts, Bogaerts, Ed. Rodriguez, Swihart, JBJ, Owens & Shaw(all of whom are 25, or under). And they STILL have their best prospects in Moncada, Devers & Benintendi, too. I highly doubt that Margot is "the one that got away". It's time for the Red Sox to get out of last place and this will help quite a bit in an area with glaring weakness.

If anything, Logan Allen might be the one that got away.

Thanks for digging up this gem. Good stuff. It was the Travis Shaw deal that was truly awful. Kimbrel has been so damn good for this team overall.

Note: I’d be absolutely killing him right now if he had blown it tonight.

Can't we still kill him, even though he didn't technically blow it

No. Otherwise Barnes is closing against the defending champs

They still paid for a sp and got a RP

Maybe he was just ahead of the curve? Now it’s relievers that are in the most demand while starters aren’t valued as much as in the past.

I also can’t imagine where the Sox would have been without Kimbrel the last few years. He’s been about the only reliable relief arm they’ve had.
