Interesting strategy going on right now. Lazor was an OC.... Haslett has been a DC/HC..... Coyle has been a DC.

Lots of experience on the staff, but the current coordinators are inexperienced by comparison. It's either really smart or it could cause huge issues.

I like it.

You can't have enough experience.

The trick is making sure those how have the experience know how to share their information without trying to take over, and for the guys receiving the knowledge to be secure in themselves and not be offended or closed minded.

We'll see.

Bengals didn't do horribly under Brat. I mean, #6 in total offense in 2005, #8 in 2006, and 10th in 2007.

2008 was the beginning of the end with Palmer's injury to his elbow, and then the Ocho Cinco fiasco, finally topped by the T-Ocho fiasco.

Yes, I know, lots of repetitive stuff, but really fans say the same things year in/out about just about any coach. I wouldn't want him back, but I don't think he was nearly as bad as everyone makes out, either.

He also coaxed a serviceable year or two out of Jon Kitna. He was a good coordinator, but he just overstayed his welcome. Just as it's probably not good to have a new coordinator every year, it's also probably not good to have the same guy for a decade.

I think he did well when he had the kind of QB that fit his system, a solid RB, and of course 2 All-Pro WR's. The down-field passing attack he employed was great while Palmer was healthy and while Ocho/TJ were at the top of their game.

Palmer got hurt (elbow) and struggled with power throws, Chad became Ocho and clowned away his NFL career, and TJ left to be a #1 that he thought he was, but wasn't even looking like a #3 by the time he was cut from Seattle (I think it was).

I think this is such an over looked *trait* or whatever you want to call it when it comes to teams/coaches and players. How many times do you see teams overpaying for a square peg that will never fit into a round hole of a system they run. Or they get a coach that runs offense/defense A when the QB/defense is set up to run B, and then coaches/teams/fans want to know why the team isn't any good.

Finding guys who just do what you need them to do within the system is as valuable as getting high picks or big free agents. Good teams have always found these guys who are discarded, but then end up flourishing under the right circumstances because they fit with the system. Round peg, round hole.

This is why free agency isn't the same anymore.... Well, that and the fact that draft picks are comically underpaid for 4 years (5 for first rounders). The days of Albert Haynesworth type FA deals are pretty much done. Miami went out and got Suh last year and their defense got worse. Even though we all bitch and complain at FA time, the Bengals have been handling their business correctly (with regards to player personnel; not necessarily coaching).

It's less about WHO you get in F/A and more about HOW they fit into your system. Guys leave for big money every year and never figure this out and wonder why 2 years later, they suck and are looking for a job.

Plus they had a top OL back in the 05-06 years

The bengals don't have the type of roster set up where they need a BIG FA signing, but there are some second tier players who would be immediate upgrades at positions of weakness, and they dont even look in that direction, which, at least for me, is the most frustrating part of their FA history.

I find it irritating that they don't try to upgrade their kicker and they don't try to upgrade their kick returner. Signing a new kick returner is not going to hurt the continuity of your team and it would go a long way toward pleasing your fans. :)

Kicker
Kick Returner
Center

Every other position has competition. Hell, first round cornerbacks are relegated to being gunners for three years, but a 4th or 5th round (i forget which round he went in) center gets handed the job, is the obvious weak link on the line, and they make no acknowledgement of it or try to upgrade

Poor center play is one area where we've been consistent for a decade.

It's the curse of the Richie Braham "deep bone bruise".
This would be one area that I would love to see them address in F/A.

Considering that Smith is walking, and you already drafted two tackles, plus extended Boling last year, the only other guy due for a contract is Zeitler. I think if you really wanted to, you could let him walk, maybe slide Whit into Guard in another year and give him 2-3 more years in the NFL. Draft another guard to groom and replace him when he's done.

Even if you don't do that, I think that the line suffers greatly because of poor blocking at the center position. When the middle collapses, it collapses the entire line.
