While we're on the subject of prospects, how about Erik mother fucking Surkamp?

26.1 IP, 22 H, 6 ER, 12 BB, 41 K,

Anybody think he'll be a really good trade chip for us? Afterall the Giants would need to get rid of Zito or Sanchez to have him starting on the big club.

A few negatives about these numbers...

1) .84 GO/FO. This is not HORRIBLE, but it is a concern (Cain is the exception)

2) 1.291 WHIP.

2) These numbers are in Richmond.

I like Surkamp as well, I am just saying that Richmond is to pitchers what Fresno is to hitters.

Some more Surkamp peripherals:

4.43 bb/9 which is high and speaks to control issues. I have his WHIP at 1.48 which is also high. His FIP is 3.05 which is good, but not nearly as good as his 2.21 ERA would suggest. And then here's his shocker: he has a 92.2% strand rate. That's amazing and probably unsustainable. All in all, he's been a bit lucky; he is pitching in a run depressing park and league, and his wildness hasn't affected his ERA. He's another of these tall, lanky LHP the Giants seem to be producing pretty regularly. He's 24 and in his fourth year in the minors. He's moved up every year (Rookie league year 1, low A year 2, high A year 3, AA year 4) so if the pattern holds, he'll be in the bigs in 2012 (the Giants and many other PCL orgs generally skip AAA for pitching prospects).

The problem is that he doesn't throw very hard (fastball tops at 90) so he relies on movement and placement to get hitters out. He misses a lot of bats with his wicked deuce, which is his best pitch. Think Kirk Reuter with a better curve, Barry Zito maybe. Could eventually turn into a decent #3 starter (like Reuter) on most teams. Good #5 on the Giants. He'd make Chez more tradeable next year.

wait .. holds a hidden watch AND holds your pliers??

It's a grappling hook and some of that heal everything soccer spray away from being Batman's.

oh, and a move to bring up that 1B Fresno is justified now. Last year's team had that mentality of "play anywhere, do anything" to win. They need to bring that back, too.

Good take tzill. I know he's not quite as good as the numbers suggest, but how can you see a 14+ K/9 and not get a hard on? I think his greatest value to the organization is as trade bait, maybe if they keep the core 4 together, he can keep Wheeler's spot in the rotation warm for him since I'm sure Surkamp will be ML ready first.

Very true. Any possibility if he isn't moved, he could be used as a middle reliever/lefty specialist?

Not likely...he's a starter, so his value will be a cheap back of the rotation guy while we pay Timmy $25MM or as a trading chip.

I think Belt's .610 OBP is unsustainable.

I really like that idea. Fuck Lopez. Get Freddie and Jack back together!

The two of them are GREAT friends, and Wilson has fallen out of favor in Seattle, no doubt.

But Wilson is an all-glove, no bat SS. We have one of those in the system (given, he is currently hurt), who has actually shown flashes of power in the pro's and flashes of a very good bat in college (Crawford).

Why give up a decent trading chip for something we already have but whom would cost more $$?

It depends upon the chip. That aside, Wilson is a proven major league SS who contributes about 1.5 WAR (about $6MM worth of value). Crawford has proven nothing at the big league level and isn't ready to step up. Wilson would be a rental and I can't imagine he'd cost more than a Culberson or a Willoghby. He's just not going to command more than that.

Good point. I stick by Jack because his glove is so good and proven at the MLB-level. He has also shown at least a slight ability to hit in the National League (more so than Tejada currently, though I don't expect that to last). Also, Wilson's contract is up after this year.

I would also be in favor of giving Crawford a chance when he is healthy, but that is trickier with roster juggling if no one is leaving in a trade.

Guess I should've just waited for your response, so I would only have to type: "+1." Hardy and Lopez could definitely still be possibilities, too, but I think most of us can agree that the price for Reyes will be too high. Wilson would be a nice compromise. Plus, it seems when Freddie is smiling, everyone is smiling. GP? Dancing Freddie gif, please?
