If we assume that Kawhi will not return, the Spurs will realize that they need the best deal possible come September. What that will be remains to be seen.

Eventually Leonard's smartest approach will be to agree to return and play his last year on his contract regardless of who he plays for, but also declined to sign for anyone until next year when he is a free agent. He could ask for a buy. Out and give up what he is due. Then he is a free agent but screwed because the Lakers don't won't have the money for a max contract for him til next year if the Lakers is his preferred choice.

LAKERS won't get Leonard this year any way. Popovich wants more then what the Lakers can afford to trade and by next year Leonard will most likely have calmed down and signed to another team like Paul George did. Wouldnt surprise me to find that Los Angeles as a preferred destination was leverage. Next year the Lakers will have the money for another max contract though.

San Antonio still maintaining a very high threshold though which leaves both Los Angeles teams out. The Spurs wants everything. And the Clippers wants to keep the 70 million in cap space free in 2019
