Just a week after Katy Perry guest-hosted College Gameday, going 7-2 in her picks and asking Trevor Knight to call her, the NFL has now selected her to perform the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show:

Pop star Katy Perry will be the halftime performer at Super Bowl XLIX, according to multiple reports.

While this does mean that the music for the halftime show is going to suck ass for the 5th or 6th year in a row, this selection at least makes some sense because she's got huge knockers. She will do an excellent job for the NFL and network ratings of drawing in the non-football fan crowd to tune into the game, which has been the whole point of the haltime show for many years. As others have pointed out, she will be one of the few acts to perform the show in recent history to actually entertain a large portion of the male, true football fan crowd thanks to her tig ol' bitties.

I also think Bruno Mars played a great show last year. The Chilli Peppers were an afterthought but that show was entertaining and contained actual musicians playing music (other than the Chilli Peppers, of course *unplugged bass*)

I have a lot of friends who have either no interest in football or only a casual interest and who indeed only watch the game for just the commercials and the halftime shows.

And the NFL doesn't need people to watch the entire game. Nielsen television ratings measure every half-hour separately. Even if people only watch the halftime show and part of rather than the whole game, that's even more watchers and thus even more ad revenue.

No, you can't just "hire Betty White" and get the same ratings. Why do you think some performers are superstars that fill stadiums and others have to play for free in a local club? Do you really think people like Madonna don't sell more tickets than some band that no one has ever heard of?

I thought that until Madonna had higher ratings than the game itself. With the reality many football fans change the channel (as I usually do) it says a lot.

It's funny how one of the choses was Rhiana and yet the NFL banned her song from playing opening night. Yeah, I am sure if they chose her she would do it.

One thing I can't help but notice ... everyone is always highly critical of the Super Bowl musical entertainers. What I would ask is if you don't like Katy Perry , who would you want. I'm kind of surprised how critical people are of the show. I personally thought Bruno Mars did an excellent job, didn't mind the Black Eyed Peas and think Perry will also do fine. Once again who do you want to see perform?
